A visit to Dan's....and more
Weekend before last (I'm playing catch-up here)...I drove up to Dan's for an (overdue) visit, driving up on Friday 3/29 and returning Saturday. As is always the case,
it was a great visit filled with great talks, great listening to all of Dan's rigs, which range from merely great to world-class. As always, the visit seemed to be over before we knew it. That's how it is when you're having fun.Dan was a great host as always. Marlene's absence was palpable, it was strange and sad from that perspective. I think Dan is doing great considering. Lots of music was spun on, primarily in the studio and in the living room, where I had a chance to audition his Aurender N100 music server and Schiit Audio Yggdrasil DAC. The performance of these units together is simply superb. If I had the room, I could be tempted to spring for one of these DACs myself. It's probably good I didn't spend TOO much more time listening to it... The studio system was, as always, simply world class. I'm more impressed every time I listen to it. I really don't think it could be improved, it's hard to imagine a finer, or more intimate presentation. I always like to post a photo of it.... https://live.staticflickr.com/7848/4...ea14ff0c_b.jpg With two laptops and a music server on hand, there was no shortage of music to play. What a great time....I always go home with some new ideas, and sometimes more. In this case, it was more. While there, I took Dan up on an offer to purchase his Sennheiser HD800/HDVA600 Headphone rig, which wasn't seeing a lot of use. I'd been impressed by it on previous visits, both in its performance and form factor. It fit so nicely on top of Dan's Wyred for sound DAC 2 that I couldn't help myself, having a similar DAC-2DSDSE in my office. It does look right at home.... https://live.staticflickr.com/7807/3...35518a6b_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7854/3...d33df804_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7817/3...baae4352_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/7819/3...9d5ecf15_b.jpg Since I set up this rig, I've spent many hours glued to my office chair. This is simply a splendid rig, and I am glad I made the purchase. Of course, Dan sent me home with all of the boxes, manuals, etc in perfect condition. Oh yes, also included in the deal was both balanced and unbalanced cables for the HD800, a pair of 0.5M Wirerworld Silver Eclipse balanced interconnects, a 1.0 M Wireworld Aurora power cord, and of course the very unique "custom" headphone stand. :D Inbound on Monday is a 1 meter long Wireworld Platinum starlight USB cable to replace the very low grade cable that I'm temporarily using. Thank you Ivan! I must say, the complete rig looks right at home in my office.... https://live.staticflickr.com/7924/3...abb5a537_b.jpg This is a great hobby, and always has been. But it wouldn't be anywhere close to what it is for me without the friends I've made along the way, and this forum has been a huge part of that. Thank you to Dan, Ivan and all of my friends here for making this hobby as enjoyable as it is for me. Of course a special thanks goes out to my good friend Dan aka jdandy. Thank you Dan!!! https://live.staticflickr.com/7879/4...945b31d1_b.jpg You can see all of the boxed up goodies in the right of this photo.... :smoking::smoking: |

Pete.......Nice report on your visit. I forgot about the photo you snapped in my office. Man I'm getting old. Inside I'm still 39. ;)
I enjoyed your visit as I always do. The next visit will be me coming down to your place to see what you've been up to this past year or so. I know you've been upgrading. Glad to hear the Sennheiser HD800 headphone and the HDVA600 amp are keeping you entertained and impressed. Gear that good is not meant to be a desk ornament, it is meant to be enjoyed. Thanks for your post. Great photos of your new headphone rig, too. |
Thanks for sharing such a great report!. It's all part of what makes AA a great place.
