Giya Grilles

I know Vivid swears they're inaudible, but I had a friend do some tests where the front grille was taken put on or off while I kept my eyes closed, and I could tell whether they were in place or not (there was an ever so slight loss of air in the sound with them on.)

Has anyone else actually tried them both ways?

I've seen first hand how unbelievably fragile they are, so I'm inclined to leave them on anyway, but I was curious if anyone else had tried them both ways.

I will note that most every dealer and show I've attended seems to demo them with the grilles off.

Hi Bill,

My Giyas are arriving tomorrow and I will give them a grilling, with and without grilles :)

To be honest I would expect to hear differences if the grilles were made of cloth (like my B&W 803D's). But maybe the mesh grilles will also cause a (slight) difference. I'm about to find out -watch this space...

Just be VERY careful; the magnets on the drivers are hyper-strong and whether your finger or something metal it takes a blink of an eye to make a $400 DEALER COST mistake.

My dealer watched as the clip on an RMAF badge at a show was sucked into a driver, damaging it. :-(

I leave mine on the G3 all the time.

When I had the B1 I damaged the tweeters too many times.

Very strong magnets X very fragile tweeters X grilles off = accident.

Ok guys, thanks for the warning, I'll be very careful. To be honest though: if the sound quality difference is none or minimal, I will leave the grilles on.

Honestly, I can't hear the difference either...

I have the Giya G2's. For casual listening and entertaining I keep the grilles on for protection. For critical listening and auditioning, I take all the grilles off. Anyone with a critical ear that has been in my room agrees that it is an improvement without the grilles.

I cant quite put my finger on the exact improvement but it just seems "purer" and slightly better sound stage and imaging. I suspect components feeding the speakers might have a hand in this. I have very resolving and detailed front end (Memory Player 64, Soulution 540, EVO 707, EVO 1 Monos).

At this point little tweaks make an impact for me. For example, I added 2 Acoustic Revive RR-777 Schumann Resonance devices a couple weeks ago and I was able to pick up on improvements. I have a fully treated room as well so reflections, nodes and reverb are all in check.

Up next, dCS Vivaldi... This should be the final piece for my 2-Channel front end.
