Many thanks Ivan! Quite an impressive arsenal of gear you have there! I had understood you were a Krell dealer at one point, but don't see any remaining Krell gear in your listings?

Krell have gone silent (I hope temporarily) about upgrading my S1200/3D, even though I think they misunderstood that I have the 3D version (out of the box)...

Seeing that you brought it up, and I’m pretty outspoken. I will share my experience with Krell, and why I will no longer sell them.

I was always quite fond of their gear; kinda grew up yearning to own the brand some day. I bought my son a new S-1200 and S-1500 amplifier. Both have given us issues especially the amp modules in the S-1500.

After multiple repairs; we had another module fail (3rd one) Krell service actually told me it was poorly designed, parts were near impossible to source, and even if they could fix it; there would be no warranty, and probably more failures.

That’s when I gave up on Krell. Sorry for sharing my bad experience.

Sorry to hear that Ivan. I believe this is a quite common problem with the S1500, which was essentially the same as the Showcase line of multichannel amps. I had a Showcase 5 for a while, which did not give me problems, but the small caps on the channel boards dry out and the channels can start to fail. My 3250 and 2250 have been rock-solid, even if by now they have gotten quite old. Patrick when still at Krell gave me the contacts of a very good Krell-specialised technician in Holland, which may come in handy if/when I have any issues.

Unfortunately though, Patrick has retired, and I think what Krell service told me now (although they were quick to answer) regarding the S1200 is incorrect. Which I find a bit surprising, since they explicitly market their rather new 4K HDR switching box as compatible with the S1200, but requiring a firmware update.

Were you able to upgrade the firmware on your (your son's) S1200 in the past?

Yes, his S1200 had the latest firmware.

Sorry to hear that Ivan. I believe the S1500 is essentially a repackaged Showcase multichannel amp. I have had one of those and it sounded great. But it seems that the capacitors on the channel boards failed after some time; there are several reports of this on the internet. Too bad Krell had trouble doing the repairs / finding parts! I currently have 5 channels covered by a 3250 and 2250, who are still going strong.

As to the S1200: were you able to upgrade the firmware?

Yes, see my answer above.

Posting for the first time even though I've been on this forum for years. It looks like we have similar HT equipment (I also have an Oppo 203, Krell s1200u 3D, a Krell amp and B&W speakers) so I decided to register as a user to answer your question.
As far as I know, the latest firmware version for s1200 u 3D is 2.1. That is the one that was released in 2019 and is (or should be) compatible with the 4K switcher. I was able to do that upgrade in Europe at the local Krell dealer/service but I don't think they are involved with Krell any more so that option is out. What you could try is contact Audio Reference GmbH in Germany and ask Mr. Mamaghani (a very knowledgeable and helpful guy) if he can do it. I am nearly certain he can since he is an authorized Krell dealer/service.
I hope that helps. Good luck!

Thank you. I hope I get to post again soon (at least questions if not answers).
