The “Music Womb” (aka my room build thread)

We had the first meeting with the architect today. Of course, she offered three plans, two of which exceeded our proposed budget by a factor of two or three.

Lots of talk about the room and lots of possibilities. When the topic of windows and doors and light came up though, she uttered what I will definitely call it - “oh yea, you want it quite and enclosed, sort of like a music womb.”

So, stay tuned. I think this will take about a year, but hopefully in the end, it will be a great “music womb.”

Is this an addition? Pictures will be required! Good luck!

Yes. Three levels. Music womb/room on the bottom, master on the main (and maybe some other stuff) and expanding some bedrooms upstairs. Of course, we’re adding a couple thousand square feet right after my daughter went off to college.

Love the term, music womb. Ha. I’m gonna use that. My wife will agree, but not in a good way. My music womb project is rounding the corner, maybe 2 more months. Like mine, yours will be worth the wait. I recommend hiring an acoustic engineer to help design room/sound proofing/room treatments. I used Jeff Hedback of Hedback Designed Acoustics, he was awesome and a key asset.

Hi Jim, can’t wait to see this come together. You may want to give GIK Acoustics a call? Ivan may know.......I’m not sure if they do “room build” type advice design plans, but I’d at least ask them since they’re local. They’re right off Northcrest Rd near spaghetti junction.

Update=> May 2019 => construction drawings done, in pricing. Already taking a month longer than expected and costing $100k more than initial budget. We have rented a place and will move and break ground in July (after permitting, etc).

The dimensions are 21x16x9. Overall, it is going to be acoustic friendly, but not off the deep end. I will have a separate room for storage, cleaning records, etc. I have consulted with Jim Smith thus far on the details - very helpful.

Worst development is that the thought of selling my TAD CR-1s made me nuts, so I’m now thinking about an integrated and a smaller system elsewhere in the house. I love the thought of having big brother and little brother TADs. We’ll see ....

Great plan, best of both worlds! This is going to be a great project...wishing all the best! I know you are a Accuphase fan but I heard two additional integrateds in Munich that were IMO very impressive, the new Vitus Integrated and the Monaco from West End Audio. There was also the monster integrated new from VAC that surprised me but price was off the charts...
