OPPO's UDP-205 4K UHD Audiophile Blu-ray disc player

Anyone planning on moving up to the OPPO UDP-205 4K UHD Audiophile Blu-ray disc player? The expected release date is this month.

I plan to take a look at it.

jdandy 04-04-2017 06:36 PM

Kal.......For your personal use or for review?

crwilli 04-04-2017 06:49 PM

For me? No, I am happy with the performance of my lowly OPPO 103 and it's ability to archive SACDs. Also, my theater has been down and out for 5 months and counting so I am not in any rush to update the 103.

Vintage Pete 04-04-2017 07:22 PM

Looks nice....do we know the price offhand? Is it "smart" with streaming capabilities?

jdandy 04-04-2017 07:53 PM

Pete.......Oppo has not published a price, nor have they posted much more than the photo above to their web page for the UDP-205. I have a feeling this player is going to be exceptional by all standards. Hopefully Oppo sticks to the April release date so we can all discover what's in store real soon.

Dan...
it will be interesting to see. I know there was some disappointment in their initial 4K player offering as it did not offer streaming capabilities. I'm thinking this one will (hopefully) have a more complete feature set.

Probably the latter; possibly the former.

1KW 04-04-2017 08:29 PM

Since I Hooked up a Apple TV in my HT I never use my oppo blu ray player

Rojet2015 04-04-2017 08:53 PM

We use Roku for streaming movies but I could use a new player for concert DVDs

imprezap2 04-05-2017 05:23 AM

as soon as Audiopraise can provide a replacement digital output board (capable of transfering high res formats) I will get one for my second set.

thughes 04-05-2017 11:04 AM

I have the 203 in the two channel room. When the 205 comes out, it will replace the 203 in the 2 channel room, and the 203 will go to the theater room.

clpetersen 04-05-2017 12:10 PM

I will take a hard look at the 205. As far as I know it will offer streaming to be similar to their Sonica line of players/DACs.

My intent would to be use it as a pre/pro and streamer directly into a multichannel amp in our our small media room, but need to research this a bit.

I have the Oppo HA-1 and am very impressed with their quality.

Yes but I am hoping that it will be a multichannel streamer compatible with Roon and/or JRiver.

jdandy 04-05-2017 02:45 PM

I am surprised at how tight lipped Oppo is being about the UDP-205.

djwhog 04-05-2017 02:46 PM

Most likely Dan I will keep the Oppo 95 I have. I skipped the 105 but will get this unit.

I also want a new TV set for one of the rooms 4k etc looking at yet another new OLED 75" pro processor etc. When I do that upgrade the 205 will go with the new set. I think that all the main features it has that I read on a beta release should be similar to the 105 with additions and maybe a take away or two. That said, for serious sound I fall back to the K03. But I prefer this 205 in my MX150 driven rig over the 203 for the performance edge etc.

Saw the prelim specs and they told me it should be in the $1600 range list so I think it will work for me :)

jdandy 04-05-2017 05:38 PM

Dave.......Thanks for the additional information. The price point seems right, too.

bigblue 04-05-2017 05:43 PM

I've been told the 203 has no apps (Youtube, Netflix etc). Is this true for the 205 as well?

BlueFox 04-05-2017 06:26 PM

Already have the 203 in the HT. I have had the 83, 93, 103 in the HT, and never use them to play music in the HT. There are better sources for that.

Garytn 04-05-2017 07:30 PM

I'm planning on getting one. I have a 105 in another room, but I'm just finishing up a room for my audio system. I got a 4K TV for that room. If I can use it to play 4K and stream Netflix, etc. then I will have one. However, I'll likely wait on some reviewers to go first (that means you, Kal :-)

aardvarkbark 04-05-2017 08:32 PM

I'm planning on getting one to play audio of concert DVDs in my two-channel system.

nicoff 04-05-2017 10:42 PM

For those of you who own a Oppo 103/105 units, those two units allow you to rip SACDs. If you are into streaming and have SACDs, you might want to hold on to your 103/105 units. I read somewhere that the 103/105 units have high resale value because of their SACD ripping capabilities.

jdandy 04-05-2017 10:53 PM

nicoff.......Once the new Oppo UDP-205 hits the market, providing it delivers what people expect, there will be plenty of videophiles upgrading to the new player and selling their old players. As far as ripping SACD's, it may be important to a very small minority of audiophiles, but I have doubts it will mean anything to the majority of folks who own a BDP105 for home theater use and wish to move up to the UDP-205. Used values will be determined by what people are willing to pay, not by what sellers want to charge. The market will self balance.

It is unlikely the 205 will have a different OS from the 203 so the streaming functionality from Netflix etc will still be missing.

It will still stream files from a NAS/USB just like the 203 but have access to a better power supply and DAC circuits. That's my educated guess.

They learned a lot from the Sonica DAC with the 9038 Pro and it is also used here. The Sonica has had rave reviews so I am hopeful.

audiohippo 04-07-2017 05:31 AM

My bdp83 has just busted a nut, so looking at this as a replacement.

djwhog 04-08-2017 07:21 PM

Looks like 17th hope more than one HDMI.

Specs say only one for audio so maybe what adopt the video. I like to feed my video to TV and audio only via RCA and HDMI to my MX150.

Doug Lax 04-10-2017 11:35 AM

:twisted:I couldn't wait I bought the 203 but I may get one and put the 203 in the basement system

jdandy 04-17-2017 02:28 PM

Here we are more than half way through the month of April and still no release of the Oppo UDP-205. Their website still says Arriving in April 2017*. Then down at the bottom of the page is says, * - Projected. Actual release date tentative and subject to changes. There's less than two weeks left in this month. I wonder if Oppo will make the April projected deadline or not.

Dan, are you sure?
That would be less than its predecessor.

Mamrak1 04-19-2017 05:37 AM

Yes, $1299 is directly from the Oppo website.

aardvarkbark 04-19-2017 07:07 AM

Apparently, Crutchfield sells Oppo at same price as Oppo. Is there an advantage to buying from one over the other?

Mamrak1 04-19-2017 08:00 AM

Crutchfield is located in Charlottesville VA. You may get it sooner if you are close to their location. Crutchfield does have a 60 day return policy as well.

Bart.......I'm not sure what you mean by "less than its predecessor." I presently use the Oppo BDP-95 in my home theater system, the BDP-83SE in the living room, and the BDP-83 in my office. I never purchased the BDP-105D, although I am positive I could be just as happy with it. I am curious how the new ESS 9038Pro DAC's sound in the new UDP-205.

Not only that, but Crutchfield has the best customer service I've ever encountered. Once you put a Crutchfield-purchased component into a system, they'll spend serious time on the phone with you troubleshooting any possible problem you might have. I can't recommend their customer service highly enough.

PMCH 04-19-2017 10:40 AM

I for one am very disappointed with the new 205 in that it doesn't offer streaming services like my 105 and 103 do. I watch Netflix more than Blue Rays and I like to integrate my cable TV into my Oppo also. With only one HDMI input, even if I use a Roku, I don't know how I can integrate both like I now do.
