Yamaha NS-5000
 

For the past six months I've been looking at the Yamaha NS-1000 speakers
since they offer very good near field imaging that suits my awkward room.

It's interesting that there is going to be a new offering on sale next year,
the next step in the evolution of those earlier speakers, the NS-5000.

They got some interesting mid and tweeter designs to minimize resonance
at the back of the drivers and flatten their response. They certainly look
the part and I'll be keen to audition them.

Estimated availability July 2016, 5500 euros/each. Similar cabinet design and drive arrangement to PMC IB2 series, e,g., 3" dome mid-range. Going for a bigger share of recording/mastering business where PMC has established a dominate role?

Unfortunately not. But to the OP - I have teh NS-1000 home version with teh matching Yamaha Centennial 2000 components. Sounds nice. BUT when used with Shindo Aurieges/Montille the speakers transform into the best ever for female vocal, small jazz with amazing clarity, detail, emotion and can be listened to for hours withut any fatigue. The Berillium tweeters are senstive and also can be a bit shrill when the material is less then perfect with SS gear. With teh Shindo much more forgiving. YMMV but I love them

Well maybe i have a chance... because now the NS-5000 will be introduced
officially at german dealers the next month´s :roots:

ns-1000 was and still is a speaker with astonishing natural sound :thumbsup:

I had the chance to listen to Yamaha NS-5000 at the Montreal Audio Show two weeks ago. I was litterally blown away by this speaker. I chatted a bit with the Yamaha rep in the room and he told me that the price would be 18000$CAD for the pair. The rep told me that they introduce this model but maybe in the future price would go down as they would introduce other models. By far my favorite speaker at the show.

What were some of its attributes that made it your favorite?

Hi there! Yes, I would believe these speakers to be more toward the full range side rather than monitors. I found the sound to be well balanced. It was not bright, not boomy. Music just seemed to flow with ease. To be honest, I didn't know about the legacy of the NS-1000 before I heard the NS-5000 so when I saw these big '80s style Yamaha speakers I wasn't expecting much. I knew Yamaha for their mainstream product but not much for their hi-fi counterparts. To say the least, it was a very pleasant surprise, but the price tag wasn't.

Since it was at the Montreal Audio Show, I spend about 15 minutes in the room watching and listening to these speakers. As with audio shows, there was a lot of people and constant background noise so it is difficult under these conditions to have an in depth view on these speakers. But, for the time I was there, they really made an impression. As I said, I found the sound to be so well balanced and very musical. The sound wasn't "dry" or bright to my ears, kind of organic. The bass was right, again to my ears.

I didn't ask the rep as to when these speakers would be available. I didn't think about this when talking to him. I was just shocked at the price tag :eek. Beyond my experience, I suggest if you have a chance to have a listen to them, they really worth it.

I don't have my pictures with me but tomorrow I will upload the pictures I shot at the Yamaha room during the show.

Your impressions echo some of the opinions that have been published about this speaker. You as well as other writers make this speaker out to be quite special and, perhaps, out of the ordinary with respect to how natural it sounds.
