No, too much voltage with a 6V6G. I'm not sure if Mullard made a 6V6. The American brands are all quite good.

Considering the various designs and iterations, it's difficult to understand which of the various tube rolling post apply to which designs. I think the chart Peter posted was for a different design than the one robert_kc and I have.

But maybe the auto biasing makes that a moot question.

Correct.

Thanks - I have 3 pairs of 6V6GT (Hytron, Pope and Bendix 5992) That are nice in their own way. Was just wondering if the old 6V6G type was worth a try. Any particular observations about the different 6V6G's you have tried?

No, but if you don't have a pair try 'em. They are different than the GT's.

Not enough to be concerned about. I got sucked into a flavor of the month tweak.

Yes, I sure have. Just made the switch last week. For 5AR4 I am using a Mullard GZ34 and also a Sophia 274B. So far I enjoy the Mullard GZ34 more. Honestly, I have a strange physical sensation when I use the Sophia 274B; it's difficult to describe but I'm wondering if that tube is ok. Everyone seems to love it but I just can't listen with it for more than a few minutes.

I'm new to tube rolling so I'm not sure I have the proper language to describe what I'm hearing. The KT150s and Mullard GZ34 are definitely different than the KT-88 and Shuguang 5U4 the unit came with. I wouldn't say better, but definitely different. More volume (power) but not as separation between the instruments and voices.

Maybe there is something wrong with the Sophia? I got a pair of the KT150's and one is defective. I think it was damaged in shipping. It sounds distorted.
I was using a Mullard GZ34 with them. I still prefer 6L6's and 6V6's . I got a nice lightly used quad of Shugunag KT66z's and really like them with a TJ Full Music 274A...same as the Sophia but has 4 pins. I got 5 of them the auction site for $225 the seller had them for years. They are no longer produced.

I'm not good at describing tube sonics but if you like 6V6's they are fine tubes. They sound rich and detailed if that makes sense. I'm listening to GE's at the moment. :music: Nice pairs turn up on the auction site. Be patient.

I have not heard the Brimar's or other Euro versions.

Isn't a 5Z4GY a low-drop 5Y3?

Tube Fvol Famp MaxPmA MaxPv Vdrop
5Y3-G/GT 5.0 2.0 125 350 60
5Z4GY 5.0 2.0 125 350 20

Yes, but the 6V6G may red plate. Try it but watch the tubes. They do sound very good with a regular 5Y3 or an 80..same tube different pins.

BTW, Zenith, Delco, Philco etc. 6V6G's are usually RCA or Sylvania but sell for less than the name brand versions.

Not every tube sounds best driven hard. The bigun's KT88 etc. benefit from a
5AR4 etc. I did use my Pope GT's with a 5Y3/5U4G and they rocked.

I put the Shuguang black glass KT66z's back in and they are one *my* favorite tubes.

Has anyone tried the big bottle Tung Sol 6L6G? It's a 6L6G in name only it is electrically a 6L6GC rated for higher voltages.
