Lately I have become interested in the new Samsung Galaxy Smart Watch. I have never owned a smart watch, and quite honestly I have no need for this device, but I keep returning for another look, another review, and continue to think I might really enjoy owning this watch.

It is important to me to have a watch that looks like a watch, not something that resembles a toy strapped to my wrist. The Samsung Galaxy Watch is impressive on that front. It is well made from high quality materials, offers a nearly endless selection of high resolution watch faces available on its crystal clear AMOLED display, provides a unique user interface for accessing its settings, applications, and specialty functions with its rotating bezel and touch screen. It also delivers decent battery life when compared to many other smart watch offerings. The watch is available in two sizes, 42mm and 46mm, with three different color choices. The quick release watch bands allow a wide selection of other watch bands to be installed. The 46mm version has a 70% larger battery than the 42mm size. The smart watch has Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, and can also be ordered with LTE connectivity with the four major carriers. The Samsung Galaxy Watch is packed with technology, yet still manages to look and present itself as a wristwatch when worn. That is what I find most appealing.

There is no doubt smart watch technology continues to evolve and is rapidly improving. No smart watch is perfect, but the current crop of offerings from the various manufacturers are advancing in usefulness and attractiveness. Like I said earlier, I have no real need for a smart watch, but I am being drawn to the Samsung Galaxy Watch as an interesting alternative to wearing my standard wristwatches.

If there are any members here that own and wear a smart watch, I would be interested in reading your impressions and experiences using it. I am particularly interested in hearing from any Samsung Galaxy Watch owners.

There doesn't seem to be much interest in smart watches among members here. That doesn't stem my enthusiasm nor did it detour me from ordering the Samsung Galaxy Watch, the 42mm version in black stainless steel. I also ordered a 20mm wide black stainless band to replace the black silicon band the watch comes with. I wanted the larger capacity lithium battery that the 46mm watch provides but ultimately decided that size would be too large for my wrist. My Tag Heuer watch is 42mm and that is as large as I'd care to go.

I should have the Samsung Galaxy Watch early next week. I am looking forward to pairing it with my Samsung S9 phone and putting the watch through its paces. I think I am going to like my first smart watch. It is going to be fun to switch watch faces on the fly to suit my mood and download new watch faces that interest me. There are literally thousands of available watch faces by many content developers.

I have an LG smartwatch and I love the thing. I hadn't worn a watch since the 70's but I do not leave home without the watch being strapped on. At work I'm in a loud environment and can't always hear my phone ringing. The watch always gets my attention as it lights up with a text or call. I also use it to voice text while driving so I don't have to take my eyes off the road. For digital music I can also control the songs I want to hear and the volume without getting out of my chair. They're also quite durable as the first one I had (on my second one now) lasted 4 years with me being outside working every day. Another nice thing is you can swipe the face and hit the do not disturb icon. Very quick and easy to do when you don't want any calls or texts. There's also a nice variety of watch faces you can change to. Another cool feature is it'll only fully light up when you raise your arm to check messages or perhaps even look at the time. I'm betting you'd really like a smart watch or if you're like me you'd wonder how you ever got along without one.

Macuser.......Good to hear you've gotten good use and long term reliability from your LG smart watch. I expect the same from the Samsung Galaxy Watch. The features you mentioned are all available on the Galaxy Watch, too. I am excited to see if wearing a smart watch is something I will actually make use of on a daily basis.

Dan, I would like to know how well built it is, and can stand up to hiking in the rockies.

I'm betting it'll take that abuse without a problem. I've been in torrential rain storms with mine and never had a problem. I also wear it daily on my job on the back of a asphalt paving machine which is a very harsh environment for electronics. I've had my phone overheat many times in my pocket on stifling hot summer days. But I've never had the watch skip a beat over the years.....knock on wood. I've also run jackhammers with it on and cut off saws where it gets completely covered in dust without a problem. My original one more than likely would've outlasted me if I hadn't been so abusive to it.

Dan, I'm pretty much old school when it comes to watches but I have to admit the Galaxy Smart watch looks quite nice. It will be interesting to hear back once you have had some time with yours.

David.......From the reviews I have watched on YouTube it is apparent the Samsung Galaxy Watches are quite rugged. The cases are solid stainless steel, meet MIL-STD-810G for durability, and a pane of scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ protects the screen. The watch is also rated for 5ATM of water resistance at 50 meters depth. One reviewer commented that he took three hard falls during a mountain bike ride and his Samsung Galaxy Watch came through it without a scratch. I would not think a hike in the Rockies would present any type of challenge.

Dave.......I am like you with respect to a long history with many mechanical watches that I have used and enjoyed. I currently have five mechanical wristwatches and three mechanical pocket watches. This Samsung Galaxy Watch will be my first smart watch, so it is yet to be determined if the functionality and features will be something I find useful enough to wear the watch daily. I will post my findings after I have had ample time with the smart watch and have mastered its capabilities.

The quick disconnect pins makes swapping watch bands a snap. Different bands completely change the presentation and appearance of the Galaxy watch.

It’s gotten to the point where a watch is smarter than I am.

Gary.......The other day I read in a post where someone said we practically have to be engineers to assemble and operate high-end sound systems. That's not far from the truth. I am beginning to think it may also be true with the latest smart watches. Smart watches have nowhere to go but up. I suspect offerings will only become more incredible in functionality and their ability to help users with everyday tasks. I am very excited to receive my Samsung Galaxy watch. It may set a brand new precedent for me in how I view wristwatches.

Go for it. My wife bought me a Apple Watch for Christmas when they were first released. The following year I bought her one. We are now on Apple Watch Series 4. I'm not a big watch fan but I do own a few other watches. I was hesitant about the usefulness of a watch that does more than tell time but after a few months I was totally hooked. I haven't worn a mechanical watch in a long time now. In fact I have no desire to even get one out of the box. I'm not too familiar with the Samsung but my Apple Watch 4 is a remarkable device. I'm sure the Samsung is equally impressive. They keep perfect time to boot. I think you'll love it.

Terry.......That is interesting to hear you no longer use your mechanical watches, preferring the Apple Watch 4. I guess we can call you a convert. I will not be surprised if the same thing happens to me. I have high hopes the functionality and usefulness of the Samsung Galaxy Watch will win me over. I have been interested in smart watch technology for several years but wasn't captured by any of the smart watches I looked at. I did check out the Samsung Gear S3 watch and the Apple Watch 3 but did not get excited enough to plunk down the cash. I was more curious about the Apple Watch due to all the hype surrounding it, but I am not an Apple iPhone owner so entering the Apple ecosystem with the Apple Watch didn't make sense for me. The Samsung Gear S3 was too large for my wrist. Now that the new Samsung Galaxy Watch is available in 42mm black stainless steel with the latest 4.0 version of Samsung's Tizen OS and improved battery life, it seemed like a perfect time to take the plunge into wearing a smart watch. I expect to be impressed with the new Samsung Galaxy Watch. By all accounts it is an amazing bit of wearable technology.

I was thinking of getting a smart watch for quite awhile when I was in HK last month I stumbled across a Garmin store, so I walked in and was really taken at the Fenix 5X Plus ( 51 mm) sapphire glass that does all I need for my cycling and keeps me up on everything from average heart beat, average resting heart beat, steps' you name it just like a smart watch should.

Honestly I didn't look or even know that Samsung had one out on the market, Im a complete Apple guy but there watch really didn't do it for me but the Garmin with its reputation in cycling was the clincher for me. I can also choose from over 1000 watch faces, widgets and apps for whatever sport I choose.

I love it so much I sold my Rolex Sea dweller, I don't miss it at all. The Garmin syncs with my Iphone and has text, phone calls and email alerts as well.

Highly recommend a smart watch and if I,d of seen the Samsung I would of seriously considered it as well, a real good looking watch.

I just checked out the Galaxy smart watch and they pretty much do the same as the Garmin and the others. The Garmin also offers a smaller dial with the only big differences is the pricing, Garmin around $800.00 vs $299.00.
