Vinyl Only/SETs/Horns

My system is featured in the current issue (No. 91) of HiFi+ Magazine, for those of you who read it. (You can download it via an iPad app if you don't subscribe, but please don't post the article or pics from it here). I will post some pics of my own when I get to a real computer. The system is not complex-a single source-vinyl- through a phono stage/line stage/amps and a pair of Avantgarde Duos. It makes music very lively, dynamic and has great midrange tonality, but does not sound like a vintage system. It does reproduce bass and high frequencies (although I have quibbles about the bass) and has a very open, 'in the room' character rather than a 'soundstage' in between the speakers- not forward sounding, just very 'there.'

Spectacular system, especially love the Avantgardes and the Kuzma. Both are products I have some experience with and highly rate. I found the Avantgardes to be more amp dependent than most speakers - they are so revealing that they can go from downright horrible to amazing even with the same type of amp with similar power from different manufacturers.

Keith- you and I pray in the same church, different pew. Love the Acapella as well. The original Lamm ML2 is highly synergistic with the Duos, but it is a hell of an amp for almost any speaker that can drive off 18 watts.

Wonderful wonderful system !
LOVE IT !
The Duos are marvellous, as you say when driven by the right amp.
2 years ago, the french importer demonstrated them with a small Micromega integrated. I wanted to ask him if the demo was to induce love for Avant Garde or Hate but I did not dare.
Congrats in this terrific system !

Thanks, gents.
You can make the Duos sound really bad with the wrong stuff behind it, they are very persnickity, both in terms of noise levels, grounding, etc. and any sort of harshness or limitations in upstream components. When right, they can be startling, in the sense that the players really are in the room, in a dimensional, pretty fully formed way, but so much rests on the rest of the equipment to get there. The Lamm amps have a very saturated, continuous quality that the AVs love. The bass is the hard part; it's physics- you can't get an active woofer to sound like a horn. (And keep in mind, there is no crossover on the midrange- runs straight from amp to mid-horn, so you get what's there, for better or worse).

That room is heaven, a very practical well executed collection of brilliant pieces..including the axe
