Subwoofer calibration order

Should I run the Audessey or JL audio calibration or both and if so which order?

Depends on how many subs you have.

If you have two or more subs, I'd turn the subs off for Audessey altogether, then run each sub's ARO independently.

If you have only one sub, you may experiment with running the ARO first, then Audessey. (Or only Audessey).

If you have a v2 fathom. I'd bias the calibration to the more sophisticated JL calibration vs. Audessey.

My two cents anyway.

If you don't turn off your JL sub when you run Audessey, you will have Bass suck out big time. ;)

Thanks Guys !

Ivan should I run the Audessy and elect no sub or elect 1 sub and turn it off and run Audessy then run the jl audio aro?

Doug... when I set up Audessy, I elect no sub; run it. Then I set up the sub using ARO.

:yes:Then that is what I will do !

Sorry to hijack thread with a bunch of questions, but for some reason I'm not allowed to create a thread and this thread seems relevant.

If you disconnect the sub during audyssey setup, will the processor still output a sub signal? In my case I'm using a Marantz 8802A. I want to experiment with DARO and audyssey's calibration to see which I prefer.

If one does decide to allow audyssey to perform full bass management on these V2 subs, how do you fully defeat the subs controls? From what I understand checking the manual it is 1) press defeat, 2) switch to Ref (not variable), and 3) turn low pass filter to off, and 4) turn LP filter to 80hz. Cant understand this last step given the LP filter is already off... Also, what about ELF trim, phase and polarity? What should these be set at? Whatever the case, this is a really involved process for those of us with dual home theater/ stereo setups that would switch between audyssey and DARO frequently.

I also notice that JL didn't give much thouht to those of us that need both the RCA and balanced connections connections since it always defaults to the balanced input and does not seem to auto sense which one is getting a signal - thus necessitating manually unplugging the balanced inputs when you need the rca signal.

The problem here is that one cannot just "turn off the subs" for Audyssey calibration and then turn them back on again.
1. If you have them physically connected when you run Audyssey calibrations, Audyssey will calibrate them and there are no options to defeat the sub EQ and keep the EQ for the other speakers, regardless of whether they are set small or large.
2. If you have them physically disconnected when you run Audyssey calibrations, the subs will, of course, not be calibrated. However, when you change the basic speaker configuration by adding the subs, most devices I have used (AVRs and prepros) will not retain/apply the EQ for the old configuration and you will lose EQ for the main channels, regardless of what you do for the subs.

So, because the JL EQ is downstream of Audyssey and cannot account for it while the upstream Audyssey automatically accounts for the downstream JL-eq, it seems the only logical option is to run JL-eq first.

BTW, there are other options when it comes to using JL with Dirac-Live.
