Auckland, NZL - ?

We are spending a day in Auckland, NZL on our way to Sydney next month and am wondering if there is anything we shouldn't miss? Only the one day, so can't do it all.

We did NYC - Sydney (36 days) with stops in Charleston, Key West, Cartegena, Panama Canal, Manta, Lima, Easter Island, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Auckland & Sydney. Pic's once I get them downloaded to the computer (do I every need a new camera).

We took the city bus for our tour of Auckland and was most favorably impressed. Spent a fair amount of time downtown around Queen Street. Lots of Xmas-gift shopping with the local paua shell trinkets, wool & possum yarn for the knitters, etc. Ferry over to Devonsport, which is similar to Lambertville, NJ, for walking & dinner. Was very nice. Think NZ deserves a week+ for a proper look.

Now that's a long cruise Glenn! As for NZ, it is definitely a country worth a multi week visit. The South Island is beautiful with mountains, glaciers, lakes, Otago Pinot Noir and tons of sheep. ;). The scenery alone is worth a trip.

The North island has just as much. In addition to Auckland, a trip to Rotorua and its natural volcanic wonders and my personal favorite, to the eastern shore and Hawks Bay for some great wineries.

It is a country of outdoorsman and for those who want to take advantage of the outdoor wonders.

Was the last leg of their Sydney-to-Sydney 104-day round the world cruise. Now that we are back we agreed that 30-days is about our max. On the upside, was the best food we've had on a cruise.

Had an excellent Hawke's Bay APA (American Pale Ale) in Devonsport.

Indeed. We would like to come back for several days. My wife had the flu (which I now have - ugh), so we weren't fit to be company. Didn't think about a flu shot in mid-July.

I have the Flu injection every year (4 strain version). Made no difference this year as the bad Flu was Influenza A, that originated in Sydney, was not in the jab! (Bloody SydneySiders!).

Its a bad flu, I was sick for 6 weeks, got Pneumonia, then multiple asthma attacks. Hopeless.

Ok now, but Im still a little short of breath but hoping at get back into training next week (9 weeks total off!).

Hope you get well soon.

Nick

Thanks, Nick. Found out that the wife & I both have strep-throat. So, on the meds for bacterial infection and should be well in another 10-days, or so. Based on the wife, this seems to linger and she is about 2-wks ahead of me. Best of luck to us all.

We enjoyed every stop on our cruise. Easter Island was terrific and were lucky to get in. Only 20% of the cruise ships that stop are able to tender people ashore due to rough sea conditions. Several folks we talked to have been multiple times and this was their first time ashore.

And, Bora Bora was beautiful. Bloody Mary's was fun, their drinks decent and food quite good, all at a reasonable price.
