Tidal and its Hip-Hop Emphasis

First, I enjoy Tidal a lot for its quality of music and convenience. IMO, while there’s always room for improvement – like more MQA Jazz - it does a good job.

Second, as most I enjoy my favorite genres of music and don’t care much for others. Some I tolerate better than others and others I really, really dislike. And Hip-Hop is one I really, really dislike – and I’m sure some could say something similar about my music tastes as well. And that’s ok!

Third, Hip–Hop seems to be overly emphasized – advertised / marketed – on my Tidal app. And I’m simply tired of it. :icon_thumbsdown:

So, IMO, the Home and Explore screens on Tidal really need some serious work. Couldn't Tidal code our musical preferences and let that better determine what is advertised to each individual subscriber? After all they already make playlists for us – and some of them are really well done - at least in my case.

IMO, I would like to see Tidal 'hop' on this request and do something 'hip' with it - i.e. no more Hip-Hop on my app please.

No word "yet" from Tidal on my request to address this issue.

A couple of points..

What is presented to me when I look at the Tidal App ( not the abridged Roon version) is never heavy Hip Hop heavy. It is a mix of everything.

You do realize that Hip Hop is the most popular genre in the US based on consumption, slightly ahead of Pop.

It is not my favorite so I basically ignore it as I do most Jazz offerings.

Well, Tidal is owned by Jay-Zee, so its easy to see where the Hip-Hip emphasis may come from...

Factor in their sub-par sound compared to Qobuz, and there isn't much to love. They do seem to have a larger library than Qobuz, but I rarely can't find what I want on Qobuz.

Jim,

Many thanks. Yes, I know about the popularity of HH - and regardless will always dislike it. It's not my genre of music and never will be.

However, it would seem that Tidal would desire to market to me according to my tastes and not send me away from their App to Amazon or spinning SACDs, etc. (a new turntable though is appealing).

Their mixes for me on Jazz and Soft Rock are good for the most part. So they know my tastes, so why not market to me accordingly? Instead, I must have 100 or so recommendations of HH on my Home page every time I start it. Since, this doesn't seem to be happening to you though, maybe it's just a glitch.

Thanks again.

Yes, Jay-Zee and some other artists. Which makes at least part of me think this is not happening by chance ...

Thanks. I'm going to wait and see if Tidal gives me a satisfactory answer, but if not I'll check out Qobuz. That said, I do like the quality of the sound on Tidal. But then again I've never compared it to Qobuz ...

I don't think it is happening by chance, as someone else noted, Hip Hop is the number #1 music genre.

baddog, though I don't have all the facts yet (waiting for Tidal to respond), I tend to be thinking in the same direction...
