Just got word he is not dead. But on life support

richardallred 10-02-2017 05:36 PM

USA Today pushed a notification saying he is not dead. I’m not sure what to believe

Canonicus 10-02-2017 05:36 PM

Jeeze!...now this!...the sky must be falling!
Talk about being ..."Heartbreakers" :tears:

Slimbo 10-02-2017 05:37 PM

What an awful day. The horrible events in Vegas and now this. RIP Tom Petty you have me many years of pleasure. I’ve always been a fan and feel very happy and lucky that I went to see him just a few weeks ago.

audioguy3107 10-02-2017 05:40 PM

Well, interesting enough, CBS News has retracted the story confirming his death...apparently not been confirmed yet but the situation is obviously pretty dire. Seems like the rest of the reporting is true.

Erroneous Reports About Tom Petty's Death Cause Confusion

This story says that Tom Petty is alive :scratch2:

Antonmb 10-03-2017 03:00 AM

Carlos, the 3rd paragraph in that article says “The reports, as it turned out, were merely premature. Petty's publicist confirmed late Monday that the rocker died at 8:40 p.m. after having suffered cardiac arrest.”

Vintage Pete 10-03-2017 04:48 AM

It's now been confirmed Tom Petty passed away at 8:40 pm PT last night (11:40 PM ET). Sad news indeed. RIP Tom. :tears:

OK when you have 35 million hits!

Watch this one!

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's a long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart

And I'm free, I'm free fallin'

All the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Blvd
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
All the good girls are home with broken hearts

And I'm free, I'm free fallin'
I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for awhile

Tell Me this last line is not so sad

Ya know Adam Sandler I think used to imitate him in his songs the way he would sing!

Growing up in SOCAl the names of the songs, streets etc Really hits home and hard :(

Does to me as well -- Huntington Beach, California -- Marina High School, '66 thru '68.

Where it was at -- for a young teenager -- music, surfin', hanging out at the beach & near the HB pier, girls, Lions Dragstrip & the new Orange County Raceway weekends, hitchhiking & bumming rides everywhere in southern Cal. The days folks. :Priceless memories & music was a big part of it.

Best Sir,

Bob

Thank you, Mr. Petty, and God bless

Petty was absolutely brillliant as a total musician and poet. In particular, he embodied in the art form a superbly incisive understanding of the human condition. To be able to creatively express such complexity the way he was able, with such raw & organic emotion and intelligence, for such important and meaningful themes, is a true gift. Some may refer to this as genius. Regardless, I join you all in saying I am thankful for his time here, for his contributions. His music touched me personally, and he is deeply missed by many. His melodies and lyrics helped me through some difficult, and very dark, times in my life. In particular for me, "I won't back down" is a humbling and inspiring anthem for resilience. That tune alone has been worth more than its weight in gold for me. Bless you, Mr. Petty. God be with you.
My best,
Shrinky

Well, I won't back down
No, I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down
No, I'll stand my ground
Won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down)
Hey, baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I will stand my ground
And I won't back down
Well I know what's right
I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground
And I won't back down
(I won't back down)
Hey, baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I…

Very very sad indeed. May his musical / poetic / artistic legacy carry on forever. In our household, at least one album by TP gets played back here every day and wish my kids (aged 19, 17 and 11) do maintain that tradition.

timm 10-04-2017 07:48 PM

I'll say this about Tom petty. He was still making relevant music even at an older age. I remember getting my friends drum kit and putting refugee on the turntable and playing the kit over and over and over.. My mom was a freaking saint.

Somehow I feel like he isn't getting his due but the beauty of Tom petty is he wouldn't give a 'F'.

Honestly ? This blows

ya know
"Somehow I feel like he isn't getting his due but the beauty of Tom petty is he wouldn't give a 'F'."

I feel exactly the same, but I wont go there since it is not politically correct the reasons. But Tom would not give a rats as you say

He was such a major artist and writer worked even with Johnny Cash, so many pop groups he was DEEP!

Surely missed but left us a lot right.:music:

Check out his rock n roll hall of fame performance with prince. Prince blew the top off - best guitar solo I've ever seen. Tom did great - everyone just sort of had to stand back and let prince do his thing.

Can't wait to get home and replay this on the SME -- 3 LP set I bought years ago. I visited the TW website this evening and it asked if I wanted a Wilbury name - came out as: "Welcome aboard the Wilbury train, Theodore Wilbury!"

Funny.

Petty was a hall of famer & rightly deserved.

When you have about 40 minutes here is an old school VH1 VHS quality days video covering his band(s) and some of his life etc.

No doubt. Prince could shred with the best of them and was a great performer. I met him in a bar in 1982 after one of his shows. Nice guy as well.

Yes, indeed.

Very unfortunate.

Antonmb 01-20-2018 02:31 AM

This just makes me sad all over again. What a shame.

John49 01-20-2018 03:10 AM

These opioids are a menace. I am on pain meds myself, but every time I try and come off... 🤯

oddeophile 01-20-2018 03:39 AM

So am I. But I weened myself off them over a period of a few months. One pill at a time. I now use other pain meds daily. Opioids are the worst thing you can do. I know. Like you I’ve been there.

VicsVinyls 01-20-2018 09:55 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if they go after the prescribers.
Fentanyl has no place being used outside of the hospital.
We only use that on terminal patients on hospice, absolutely ridiculous that anyone can
get a prescription for this drug.

I agree and wish someone would. How many people have to die before action is taken.
