Anyone have any "interesting" stories about their pets acting weird?

Besides the usual and rather frequent behavior of cats staring at things that are "not there" as far as we can tell at least, I've come across quite a few unexplained phenomena. :sigh:

A good friend of mine was visiting a couple living in a very old house and they brought their pooch with them. Having stayed late and being offered to spend the night, my friend, his wife and their pooch accepted the offer. Waking up in the middle of the night from their pooch barking and making a ruckus, my friend walked down the corridor towards an unoccupied room to witness his pooch playing with an "invisible" friend as the ball was rolling towards the pooch... :smoking: The owners of the house had no pets of their own nor have they ever witnessed anything out of the norm prior to that incident.

Some chinese people believe that all type of cats have the ability to “see spirits” and can particularly chase out the bad ones.

Macuser 02-25-2019 07:23 PM

I've wondered that many times myself. My cat is constantly looking at things that aren't there; or at least I can't see them.

PHC1 02-25-2019 07:36 PM

The one thing that freaks me out the most is when my cat will stare just above my shoulders as if someone is standing there behind me. At that moment the eyes light up as if there is a light source reflecting from his pupils.. Eerie.. Can't help but turn around and check behind me.

I'm a dog guy and don't know much about cats. My dogs are well-versed in the english language and watch me intently.

After my in-laws passed away, our dogs frequently looked up high..........we used to say they were looking at Grandma and Grandpa.

What about you cat guys, do they understand english?

Yes, my cat understands two languages very well. Not enough to have a full blown conversation obviously but he is very much in tune with what is being said as long as it applies to him. :D

Contrary to what some people believe, cats even having a much smaller brain compared to dogs, understand a lot of commands, the difference from dogs, is that cats couldn't care less about what we want, but they definitely understand their name and when we are upset about something they had done. That's what I love most about cats, they still do what they want, period.

That's awesome.

My dogs always loved when Poppy came Home from work, and now Poppy takes him to work everyday.

He doesn't know how fortunate he is being able to go to work everyday with me.................and that makes both of us. :D

Imo they're both awesome creatures and more like small people with fur coats.

Explain me this... How do dogs and cats know their "masters" or other family is coming way before they get there? My dog which passed away some years back would get up and come to the door at least 5-10 min before someone from our family or relatives that would often visit even get there? Same with my cat today. He is at the window exactly a few minutes before someone arrives and my wife tells me he does the same when I am coming home. :scratch2:

Here's my take on this —

1. Dogs love the same routine and are super keen of noises and their surroundings — so if you come home the same day everyday, that is easy for them.

2. They are super aware of how people act and every move we make before someone arrives.

3. They have super hearing and learned the sound and vibrations of your car from a distance.

4. Great sense of smell also helps.

5. If the TV or Music is on the same channel — they remember what comes next.

6. They understand our language and listen to key phrases.

7. They also must have a built in clock, solar activated.

8. They listen and observe everything and especially love to please.

Makes sense except that my dog would know my in-laws were arriving before any of the "humans" in the house did... and at least a few minutes in advance which would be during various times of morning, day or evening AND in different cars. I can understand that perhaps a specific acoustic signature of the exhaust (highly unlikely given the distance a car covers in 5 minutes) but various cars? Hmm...

I'm more inclined to believe it has something to do with the fact our hearts are emitting an energy field (scientists are just tapping into this) which they think extends for at least 5-7 ft as far as they can measure but no one would be surprised that field extends much further out. Perhaps the animals are tuned in to that unique energy field/signature of their owners and family they love?

The heart is the most powerful source of electromagnetic energy in the human body, producing the largest rhythmic electromagnetic field of any of the body's organs. The heart's electrical field is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the electrical activity generated by the brain.

However, contrary to the article which undermines the dog's ability to predict when your in-laws are coming, such that the dog is perfectly calm napping in one room when suddenly he jumps up and heads for the door wagging his tail and vocalizing the fact that "someone" is coming, at which I am still blown away. Of course he is much happier to see the mother-in law than the master but that's a different story... :D

An interesting excerpt from an article. :scratch2:

A Boy and His Dog
By now, many people are familiar with the HeartMath Institute’s widely publicized research showing heart-brain interactions between persons in close proximity: couples sleeping; a mother and her infant; individuals in coherent states.

The institute also has found that a type of heart-rhythm entrainment, or synchronization, can occur in interactions between people and their pets. A lot of pet lovers surely will appreciate the results of an experiment HMI Director of Research Dr. Rollin McCraty conducted with his 15-year-old son. McCraty did the experiment with son Josh and the boy’s dog, Mabel, at the HMI Research Center in Boulder Creek, Calif., using electrocardiogram monitors to record heart-rhythm data when the pair were together and apart.

“Here we used two Holter (electrocardiogram) recorders, one fitted on Mabel and the other on Josh,” McCraty wrote in his paper, The Energetic Heart: Bioelectromagnetic Interactions Within and Between People. “We synchronized the recorders and placed Mabel in one of our labs.”

Next, McCraty wrote, “Josh then entered the room and sat down and proceeded to consciously feel feelings of love towards Mabel. … When Josh entered the room where Mabel was waiting and consciously felt feelings of love and care towards his pet, his heart rhythms became more coherent, and this change appears to have influenced Mabel’s heart rhythms, which then also became more coherent.”

If you’ve ever wondered what goes on in your dog’s mind, or heart, when you leave home, this may help: “When Josh left the room, Mabel’s heart rhythms became much more chaotic and incoherent, suggesting initial separation anxiety,” McCraty wrote in the paper, which is now a HeartMath scientific monograph.

https://www.heartmath.org/assets/upl...-Dog-graph.jpg

The top of the graph shows the dog’s (Mabel) shift when the boy (Josh, shown in the lower part of the graph) used the Heart Lock-In Technique to shift into coherence. There was no physical contact between the dog and boy.

Regarding these connections from person to person and between people and pets, McCraty later wrote, “Although more research in this area is still to be done, I do feel that we can affect our immediate environment. It appears that there is a type of communication occurring between people above and beyond body language or verbal communication. I believe we’ll see in future research studies that we are affecting each other’s moods and attitudes, both positively and negatively by the electromagnetic fields we radiate.”

“In our work with pets and their owners, we’re seeing that a pet owner can create what we call a heart-filled environment when practicing heart-focused techniques (a cornerstone of HeartMath tools and technology). The pets respond by becoming more affectionate, more animated and more connected with the pet owner.”

See, you already started with the wrong assumption.

They are the “masters” and we are the slaves.
