Accuphase DG-68 in bound

I pulled the trigger on the new DG-68. I plan on using this at least initially with my E800 Integrated. Shipping in July...

Hhmm, I would probably put the DG-68 in the Reference System and shift the DG-58 to the E-800. Unless you use only the digital inputs of the DG-58 in your Reference System.

Yes, try the DG-68 in the reference system. When I had the DG-58 in my C3850 / A200 rig, I heard a slight "veil" with the DG-58's voicing engaged. I preferred the straight non-voicing option.

This was a surprise because my room wasn't treated. I bought the DG-58 with the intention to correct any room anomalies, but at the end I sold it since it was actually doing more harm to the sound. Hope the DG-68 is more transparent.

My experience with the DG-58 was completely opposite, and quite positive. That’s why I’m excited to get the new DG-68.

FWIW; the DG-58 has surprisingly been a good seller over the years.

I was very surprise as well considering my room is pretty much a square. I reached out to several forum members and even Accuphase for guidance. If the "veil" that I was hearing can be eliminated in the DG-68 (better DAC, CPU etc), I would love to try it again.

Looking forward to your review vs the DG-58!

Different judgements about the sound character of the DG-58 may be due to the way of how one integrated it into the system.

a) not using the built in AD / DA, i.e. only digital in and digital out.
Inserting the DG-58 as EXT DSP of the DC-901 works well with me.

b) using the built in AD / DA, i.e. DG-58 between preamp and power amp.

I tried to feed the output of my phono preamp C-37 to the analog inputs of the DG-58 (still using the digital outputs to go to an external DAC).
I ended up using my Nagra VI as AD before feeding its digital output to the DG-58. IMHO the ADs of the Nagra VI result in a much more neutral, natural and transparent sound, no veil.

Did you guys use method a) or b)?

I use method A in my Reference System, but will use method B with my E-800.

I used the DG-58 as a DAC. So no unnecessary conversion.

Today I confirmed that the new DG-68 has the same dimensions as the DG-58.

Accuphase DG on Analog A>D>A vs Raw Analog

Gents

Can anyone provide an assessment of the overall performance of the DG vs the raw Analog? I have to believe that chopping the virgin Analog manipulating it and then putting back together takes away from the RAW Analog from the record.

I'm using Van Den Hul Colibri Pickup on a VPI HotRod
Manley Steelhead with Hot Tubes
Tenor OTL WI 75
B&W 802 D3

I can't imagine that losing bits on A>D and converting back D>A can sound better than this.

Cheers
Duffster
