What Do You Fill your stand With?

I have a VPI turntable stand that is filled with a fine grey sand. I bought it used and it came that way. But now I am moving half way across the country and can't see bringing the sand. Once I am moved, what should I fill the stand back up with? I am not even sure where I would find the fine grey sand.

So I am curious what others use to fill their stands. Is there something better than sand?

I believe Play Sand will do the job. You can usually find the bags at Lowe’s.

You need to ensure that the sand you get is completely dry, some play sand is not and can then result in moisture and rust issues when used in metal stands. Kiln dried fine sand is recommended and can be found at most large home improvement stores.

I use a mix of frac sand and #7.5 lead shot.

I used black aquarium quartz sand to fill some bookshelf stands a while back, it poured in a small opening very easily.

It seems to me I remember reading about some type of fancy audiophile fill. But it was a number of years ago and I don't remember much else about it.

I appreciate everyone's help. It seems just using the same type of fine grey sand is the way to go.

I recall reading Harry mentioned using river sand (not beach sand) and to spread it out and let it dry a couple days (stirring it as it sits n' dries). The other option that is possible with the VPI stands is using zing shot (which is lead shot).

Some folks with this fill option prefer a mix -- sand & lead.

Bob

I used dried-out Willamette River sand for the DIY stands I built for my bedroom system.

I bought fine play sand at Lowe's few years ago. Sadly it was too wet. I tried to dry it, but never felt comfortable with it, so I spread it out in the back yard.

I'd think some very small lead shot would be suitable, but I never got that far.

You don't need "audiophile" sand. You can get at a welding supply or Lowes /Home depot. Just make sure it is dry.
