Logitech Harmony 900 Remote Gets Serious IR-RF Power

Harmony has been known for creating some of the best consumer-affordable and usable universal programmable remotes. The Harmony 880 was a milestone, but nothing in comparison to their panel-like remote, the Harmony 1000. Now, Harmony brings us the Harmony 900, which promises to do everything but clean the dishes.

The Harmony 900 is the first of the Harmony remotes to come with a set of RF/IR sensors. Previously the sensors were additional components, increasing the cost of a programmable system. While RF control of components is nothing new, the Harmony 900 brings an interesting twist to the table.

The remote comes with what are called mini-blasters. The purpose of this sleek little component is to convert the RF signal into IR signals that can be interpreted by your components. Previously, emitters needed to be stuck on face of your IR components, usually with tape or glue to hold them in place. Now, just one mini-blaster is capable of controlling several IR components while keeping your equipment hidden from view.

In terms of the remote itself, it comes with a high-res touchscreen, although not as big as one might like. It also includes the one-touch macro buttons as usual. I for one can't wait to get my hands on one of these puppies. Unfortunately, as with all Harmony products they are not extremely affordable in this economy. Currently the price is set at $399.

That's a step in the right direction.

The Logitech Harmony 900 looks promising. Nice shape. Numbers and letters, touch screen, macros, recharging dock, radio frequency control of RF emiters, downloaded data base. I might have to take a look into this one.

I will personally never buy any Logitech product again. I have a Harmony 1000 remote, and from day 1 it locked up, it has a runaway volume issue, and serious problems with transmitting signals. I went on Logitech's website, and they have a user forum that allows users to talk. Everyone on the forum says the same thing, that what was happening to my remote, happened to theirs too. The people on Logitech's own forum were livid that the H1000 was flawed from the factory, and no firmware update would help, and Logitech wouldn't budge on helping out the customers. So I contact Logitech, and they refuse to help me too. I told them it was a design issue, and that I wanted them to stand by their product. Eventually, they just ignored me and said my warranty had expired. They know the product is flawed from the factory, and they know it is their fault, and they wont do anything to make it right. I found they wouldnt stand by their product, so I wont give them any more business. Go with Philips, that is what I am doing. They have a new Pronto that is about the same cost as the Harmony 900.
