McIntosh C220 Pre-Amp Remote Control - having issues

Hi All

My remote for the c220 has always acted up a little.

For example, I'd press the volume + button and although the red light at the top would go on the volume wouldn't increase. Then after a few tries the it would work.

Today, that stopped working all together. I tried fresh batteries (two different types) and in each case the red light lights up but the C220 won't respond.

I tried pressing most of the buttons but no response. All functions on the C220 work when using the controls on the unit.

I figure I must have a dud remote (well hoping as I don't want to bring my C220 in for a check up!).

There's no way for me to test the C220 since I don't have any other remotes that it would respond to. The only other remote I have is the for the Oppo 105.

I'm thinking the best option is to take the remote to a dealer and see if it works on a different C220 unit. But I'm wondering if there's something else I could try. Plenty of experts and knowledgeable people on this forum so I figure someone might have come across a similar issue.

Thanks!

Eddie

Well a little bit of an update...remote works now! I think the remote must be the dud.

Eddie.......Try resetting the microprocessor as outlined on page 17 of the owner's manual. Hopefully that will get you up and running again. Another alternative is to try using the Alternate Remote Codes. You can select that function using the information found on page 13 of the owner's manual.

Thanks Dan. I'll give that a try.

I find sometimes after a power cycle this problem clears on my MA6600. It does a similar thing sometimes, and after unplugging and plugging back into the wall, the remote starts working fine again.

Thanks Grayalf, I'll keep that in mind the next time it happens.

Upgrade my C220 to C2300

There is only 55 db of gain for MM cartridge C220

Is it a good idea to upgrade to the C2300 to get the PHONO for MC cartridge

I have the C220 paired with Bryston 4BSST2 and focus audio speakers FS-788

Or is there better upgrade from the C220 to get more gain

What phono cartridge are you using...MM or MC? The C220 should have plenty of gain for a MM or high output MC.

I need to revive this thread unfortunately as this remote control issue just will not go away. I listen to music most days of the week and I have issue with the C220 not responding to the remote control at least during 50% of my listening days.

I tried the p17 reset as well as the undocumented 2-button reset for C220:
- press and hold "Tone Bypass" and "Output 2" at the same time for a few seconds.

I tried unplugging the unit as well but no luck. I have fresh batteries in the remote as well and I know it's working because the red light comes on whenever I press a button.

There's no pattern to the problem appearing or disappearing. One day it'll work fine and the next it won't. But it's starting to happen frequently and it's gone beyond annoyance now.

Thing is, this problem has been happening from the beginning. It's just gotten worse over time.

Anyone have any idea as to what could be happening with the C220? Perhaps the sensor on the C220 is fubar?! I really can't afford to have an expensive repair right now so I'm hoping there's some solution I haven't tried yet.

I have to say I'm highly annoyed that a unit at this price point and quality would have an issue like this right from the start. I should've sent it back when I had the chance to be honest but I just assumed I was doing something wrong! :)

Eddie.......I liked your idea of carrying your remote to a dealer to see if it misbehaves on a C220 there, providing the dealer still has a C220.
