Nikon D850
 

My wife finally received her new Nikon D850 after a rather long wait. She's been getting to know it better over the Christmas break and at my request, took a quick photo of one of my McIntosh MC75's. The result was most interesting. This image was taken in normal, after dark room lighting with no flash.

She was curious how the detail compared to her Nikon D800 and D810 so here's a crop from the above image showing one of the KT88 tubes. The bright white refections are the lights on our Christmas tree. You can see both of us staring at the camera preview at the top of the tube with the fan spinning overhead. The blue lights below the fan are my McIntosh blue meters reflecting off of the door to her studio on the other side of the den. The detail inside the glowing KT88 is remarkable for a non-flash, spur of the moment photo. Just before she took this shot, I grabbed my microfiber cloth and quickly wiped any visible dust off the MC75. Obviously, a microfiber cloth can't compete with the D850 as evidenced on the left of the tube base.

Anyway, thought it was an interesting view of the MC75 and worth sharing. I asked for more system photos after seeing this one and will post as soon as she will pay attention to me. She's too busy playing with her new toys.

For the record, I'm not a photographer - that's her job.

Thats an really great photo , what a camera and photographer.. that is sure worth the wait.

Incredible detail with the D850. I asked to be sure and the image was taken with her Nikon 24-70mm, 8 second exposure. That image was with her 24-70G lens, she now has the new 24-70E on the D850. The images are the same image. She just pulled out a piece of the first image to see detail. I liked the crop and she saved it for me as a separate image. It's like having two separate photos; one of the amp and a macro shot of the tube.

Please give your wife my congratulations. The new Nikon D850 is a terrific, great camera. We are so blessed with such an incredible "embarassment of riches" when it comes photographic tools these days (cameras, lenses, sensors, software, displays, printers) and yet....specs geeks in photo forums still b*tch.

(Note: soap box rant follows...)

Fuji just released an incredibly sharp 80mm Macro for its x-system; it's specifically designed for scientific, engineering, nature, documentation, and studio macro photography. It has to be sharp to do that kind of work, yet one of the "YouTube" video review gurus said it was "too sharp for portrait photography" and produces a "cat's eye" bokeh when shot wide-open. Well, guess, what, ZenProMedia? Its designed to be sharp when shooting macro photography stopped down (like f/11-f/14) to provide lots of depth of field, which you really need when shooting very close to a subject and not lose sharpness due to diffraction at those apertures. It was not designed to be a "portrait lens". Man...one lens is not sharp enough, the other too sharp. :mad: D*mned if you do and d*mned if you don't.

I know that audio forums can have "bones of contention", but they can't hold a candle to the "specs geeks" on photo forums; they make me crazy. :crazy:

I hear you on the photo forums. Better yet, I hear her constantly talking about the photo forums. She sends me links to the more entertaining threads and I agree with you. Photography definitely has some serious "bones of contention."

She loves her photography and all that goes with it. I'm confident she will be busy for the next year playing with her new D850 and laughing at ridiculous photo forum posts when she's not messing with it. Thanks again! :thumbsup:

McIntosh MC75s are certainly photogenic. If you think they look good in pictures, try taking your eyes off of a pair of the real thing in a room with you. No photo comes close.

Beautiful pics - it's fun to look 'into' the tube and see all the detail in the reflections. It's like looking into another world.
