PurePower 2000 AC Regenerator gets new batteries

My PurePower 2000 AC Regenerator has auxiliary battery backup. This is a super feature when you are listening to music and a utility power outage occurs, or even a momentary power interruption. The music just keeps on playing. Now that my studio system includes the Aurender N10 music server it becomes even more important to have auxiliary backup power to support the hard drives and files from unintended power loss.

Earlier this week during a check of the PurePower 2000 battery reserve power I noticed the display was not showing 100% battery power. Since the batteries in it were the original factory batteries, probably eight years old, it was time for new batteries. I ordered six new HC1221W 12 Volt 21 Watt sealed lead acid rechargeable batteries from BatteryMart, exact replacement batteries. They arrived today (quick shipping) and I installed them in less than a half hour.

The PurePower 2000 has a hinged front cover. Once four recessed screws are removed the cover swings down to reveal three small fans on a bracket and the battery tray. The fan bracket was held by two screws, and two more screws held the battery tray closed. The six 12 volt batteries are wired in series to a quick disconnect plug. Once unplugged the battery tray slides completely out of its recessed cavity. Replacing the batteries was as simple as unplugging the wires and recessed female terminals from each battery, and replacing the wires on the new batteries. Once complete the battery tray is slid back into the recessed cavity in the PurePower 2000, the battery harness plug gets reconnected, and replace the screws that hold the battery tray and the fan bracket in place. I cleaned the fan blades and wire guards before I swung the hinged front cover back in place, and secured the cover with the four recessed screws. Everything looked much better with the dust removed.

I powered up the PurePower 2000, ran the battery self-test to check the battery reserve power. It is back up to 100%. The manual says the batteries should last five to six years, so I think I am good for awhile. I tested the battery voltage of the old and new batteries. There was quite a difference, and the new batteries haven't been fully charged yet. They will float at 13.5 volts. I am happy to have this battery maintenance task completed. Auxiliary battery backup power for the studio system provides me with peace of mind, especially with my new Aurender N10 music server.

Dan... nice job, and thanks for documenting everything with photos. Out of curiosity, what was the entire battery replacement cost?

jdandy 01-07-2017 12:02 AM

BatteryMart.com charged me $22.95 per battery, $137.70 total plus 25.37 shipping from VA. I ordered them Tuesday night and they arrived this afternoon. The grand total was $163.07.

Dirt cheap for the peace of mind, and protection they provide; thanks!

Ivan.......I have eight other UPS Backups the support televisions, satellite receivers, computers, and my Roland digital work station in the studio control room. I buy all of my replacement UPS batteries from BatteryMart. They are very competitive with pricing, their batteries are fresh and well made, and they ship fast. I have done business with them for years and have no complaints.

Masterlu 01-07-2017 12:32 AM

Great tip! I have countless battery backups myself. :stars:

I checked the PurePower 2000 battery status tonight. The new batteries are looking good.

I was wondering what my project would be next week. Now I know. I think mine is the same age as yours and, even though reading at 100%, I should do it now.
Battery back-up has been a blessing many times here in Naples.
Thanks Dan

I did mine a few months ago. Battery was reading at 100% when plugged into the wall, but went down way too quickly (within a couple of minutes) when unplugged.

Battery life of a UPS depends on a few things:

First, consider the desired run-time after you lose mains power. Are you using the UPS for protection only and expect to shut down the load relatively soon after you lose power, or will you continue to watch tv or listen to music on battery-power for hours? Depleting a battery more than 50% regularly will shorten its life span. Also, It's a good idea to evaluate criticality of the application where you are using the UPS. If deemed critical or long run times are required, batteries should be proactively changed out every 2-4. If not very critical, they can last several years.

Thanks for that info and pics Dan--I have two of these--better start limbering up for checking the battery assault--not salt and battery --Ha!

Did'nt realise the Front folds down--frankly been reluctant to touch anything incase something goes awry.

Their previous service record /etc /ahem(!) was noted--but my recent dealings with Damian have been exemplary and 100% forthright and encouraging--kudos!

Des.......The batteries weigh five pounds each and the tray weighs about five pounds. It isn't unmanageable. Make sure you remove the power cord from the PurePower 2000 and unplug the battery harness. Until the battery harness is unplug their is dangerous voltage inside the unit even when unplugged from the AC power.

Once the new batteries are installed and the PurePower 2000 is powered on you can test the transfer to battery backup by momentarily pressing and releasing the Power button. The PurePower 2000 will transfer to battery for about 10 seconds, then return to regenerated power from the utility power. I tested the transfer to battery power twice tonight with my studio system powered up and it just kept right on playing. Gotta love backup power.

Points noted and thanks for the headsup Dan:thumbs:

Just an aside have you ever had to adjust the Trimpot on the Bottom left hand Grill opening for Amplifier Transformer hum?-- I may have use it -- turn left or right --or is it trial and error?

Des.......Yes, I adjusted that trim pot when I first installed the Purepower 2000 because it caused a slight hum in the MC2301's power transformer. A minor adjustment of that trim pot silenced the issue immediately. I have never had to adjust it again.

DesW 01-09-2017 10:05 AM

Ah Thats fine thanks Dan--yes my Tube Amp is just starting to come on from 0 decibels

so will try the pot --the Amp PP is on the floor at the back damn

-- real nuisance to get at --ah well--ha!

Best,

Des

jdandy 01-09-2017 10:16 AM

Des.......Make the adjustment by turning the pot left or right until the hum disappears. Make small adjustments at a time, not large turns.

The Purepower 2000 is a great unit and I'm glad you found a way to give it new life with quality batteries without risking sending it back to Richard and Damian thus entrusting them at all with your equipment. I owned a 2000 a few years ago with very fond memories of the great sounds it brought about in my system when plugged in and even better when I unplugged it playing my system totally off the batteries. That was/is an amazingly well designed and good sounding unit.

jdandy 01-09-2017 11:48 AM

SCAudiophile.......I agree with you. It has been years since the PurePower 2000 was installed in the studio sound system. I have become accustomed to its improvements and would not want to be without it.

It's one hell of a great unit!

+1 on both counts--it delivers !

Thanks Dan,
The batteries arrived yesterday from Battery Mart and I installed them today thanks to your perfect instructions and pictures.
There was one heck of a lot of dust inside the PP but, after 8 years and a lot of remodeling that area, I can understand it.
Thanks again for your guidance.

Howard.......You are welcome. I'm pleased to hear you were successful getting fresh batteries installed in your PurePower 2000. It is a well designed product, manufactured so an end user can take care of simple maintenance like battery replacement. You should be good for at least the next six years, maybe longer.

I am considering the Pure power AC 2000 for my system ; Xa100.8 mono blocks ,Aurender 100 XL and MSB DAC. Are you using 1 AC 2000 for your ENTIRE SYSTEM or 1 for the amplifiers and another unit for the DAC ?

doggiehowser 02-15-2020 07:11 PM

Bought a pair of PurePower 1050s in 2011. I guess 9 years has been a good run.

One failed to power up a month ago.

The other died last week. There was a particular heavy thunderstorm so I had disconnected power to the unit. Afterwards, the display powered up by either showed battery was too high. Or 0C. Then input voltage was 0V.

Ordered a PS Audio P15 to replace them.

I swear the sound improved when I replaced the two 1050s with a pair of Essentials Sound power conditioner. Those regenerators must have been on their death beds.
