Need Krell MD10 repair. Any ideas?

So my friend's Krell MD10 CD transport has been out of commission due to a laser failure for the last 12 years. He just bought a Philips CDM-3 laser assembly that is supposedly in a working condition. Any idea who can do the repair for him out there? Krell won't touch their own older CD players in terms of repairs. :smoking:

I had this transport and loved it, simply gorgeous !!! Out of the blue my dealer and friend called me and asked if it was in working order. I said yes, he said sell it now, Krell just informed him there would be no further support. Sony/Phillips would not provide the drive assembly in small quantities.

If the laser assembly is a complete module I would think any competent Tech could replace it. Hopefully no alignment would be necessary.

What a beautiful machine. It is a shame that it could end up as a beautiful paperweight. Hope your friend can find someone to repair it. Or he can go the route of using digital files and no longer have a need for a transport.

He is "Old Skool" when it comes to music playback. Likes his media "physical" not in digital bits on the computer. :dunno: I can't convince him on the fact that CDs are also digital bits. :)

Happy to say we were able to find a new Philips laser assembly with the controller board. Easy swap and fortunately no alignment was necessary. The MD10 sings again and sounds spectacular. Blows the doors off the emotiva CDP he was using. Fantastic sounding transport.

I'm so happy you got it fixed, I want one !!! I've always regretted selling mine. If you could find the Krell dac with sync-out (clock) I bet it still hangs-in with today's best. (the dac may have been called Processor 64 or there-abouts) :music:

Reference 64 is the model I believe you are thinking of.

My friend also took his Krell KSA-100S amps down to Krell and had them all re-capped and checked out. Good to go for another 20 years. They now also sound as great as ever. Good to see his gear from 20 years ago breathing with new life and sounding fantastic. He is very happy. :music:

My friend uses the Krell Studio DAC. The combo with the MD10 is fantastic just like it was all those years ago. :music:
