Tannoy Glenair 15 with MC402?
 

I am in the process of upgrading my speakers (B&W 804S). I am home demoing a pair of discontinued B&W 803Ds, I like them a lot. I see a pair of Tannoy Glenair 15's on Audiogon. They are near me so I can audition them personally. I am just wondering how do these speakers match up with the MC402. Rest of my equipement in my signature. Will be used for 2 channel stereo only. Planning to go in-wall for my surround sound in the near future.

I love the Glenaires... Never heard the 15's though. I would like to.

My first thought is that these speakers are better suited to lower powered tube amps.

But, there are many that really like HE speakers with high powered amps.

Try to get a demo and report back.

I wouldn't be concerned with SS vs. tubes, your 402 would sound great with them.

I remember reading this a while ago. The reviewer LOVED this speaker with high power amps.

Good find Jeff. Very thorough and interestingly composed review. Although I was a bit bothered by how he kept saying that the Glenair only had one driver - it's not a single-driver speaker. It has a cross-over and two distinct drivers that happen to be concentric.

One of the HUGE advantages of the concentric speakers is that they operate as a point source making it possible to position yourself very close to the speakers without worrying about giving the drivers enough distance for the sound to "integrate."

I can vouch that close-field listening is quite an experience. The example of giant headphones is not quite accurate because the sound is not in your head but in front of you and with quite a bit of depth.

For the past few days, I've been enjoying the Sandringhams with the 1.8+1.8W Bottlehead SET ($400!) and listening closer and closer to the speakers and I am amazed at the soundstage and detail I am getting from this setup.

I am not sure if Tannoy had in mind close-field listening when they concocted their concentric drivers, but it's the perfect speaker for that, IMO.

PS The ONLY thing I don't like about close field listening is that it feels weird to move your listening position well past the middle of the room. Somehow in my head I have this "geometry" and placement in mind and being so close to the speakers is a bit like dealing with a "close talker". It's mostly psychological and a matter of habit, but I had to mention it.
