Any Plinius fans ?

I've been reading their newer stuff is supposed to be very nice, especially the Plinius SA Reference. Has anyone heard this amp? It's supposed to be on the warmer side of neutral.

Thanks!

I'm a big fan. Plinius power amps are stupendous and one of the best value pieces around bar none. Their fly under the radar branding does not allow them to charge more hence their superb value. I have heard the SA reference and the 103 power amps quite a bit.

I would say they are pretty neutral though not thin sounding. Very dynamic and again you will wonder where all the bass has come from, though it is not uncontrolled bass at all. I would say it even surpasses the MBL 9011 on this front. Of course the Pure Class A bit helps really give them the emotional connection as well.

If you can stomach the sometimes harsh re-sale values they are a best buy imho.

Thanks howie,

I appreciate your opinion very much. I've been reading so many positive comments all over the place. I don't know why I never looked into them. Thanks!

Hi guys i'm also a Plinius big fanboy, my friend own's the SA-250 MK1V with his Acoustat's Spectra 8800s and it's magic, i am 67 years old and audio as been my ONLY hobby in 40 years plus, i have heard many many very expensive systems and this is one of the best that i have heard, all this with ( don't laugh ) two Promitheus passif preamps, that for me was quite a surprise BUT it is what it is.

That amp gives me a chubby, I would like to hear it on my Maggies. Is it Class A?

Oh, that's it. Ha! Talk about sucking down a lot of electricity, I think those need their own power generator. I bet once they get good and warmed up, they must sound very nice.

I owned the Plinius Odeon (multichannel) for years, using it with Dali and Dynaudio speakers. Built like a tank and beautifully finished with a terrific sound. I sold it when the company was going through some financial difficulties and I was worried about continuing support, but they've been back on their feet for a while now and still making great products.

It was on the warmer side of neutral, but not by much. It could be a good combination with your TADs, just depends on how much warmth you need.

They don't have a big dealer network so you might have trouble getting one into your home for a demo.

Johnbr 05-28-2012 03:06 PM

Yes it is Class A.

I don't want to derail this thread but I will follow up in the CJ 350 thread.

Hi randerson3024, You have a choice 250 watts class AB/ or ?? class A you have a switch my friend is always on class A and yes it gets pretty hot it would be a very good match with your Maggies.

VT Skier 05-28-2012 07:12 PM

And they do get warm; my cat loved laying on top of the Odeon.

chimaera1982 11-18-2012 03:25 AM

Long time user of the Plinius 9100, driving my Liuto Monitor. Very good synergy, it leans a bit on the warm side but its very fast and punchy, ample power to drive the Liutos. One thing am missing is a HT bypass. Just bought Liuto Center and REL T5. Now figuring out whether to get AV amp to drive just the center speaker or a AV preamp and a mono...

Decisions decisions..

I have owned a SA-100MKIII for over 12 years. Amp is like new and sounds great. In my current tri-amplified system it is used for the mids. The amp errs on the warm side, more tube like.

Welcome Frank! We met at the RMAF... Recently got my SA250MK-IV back from getting it's "Signature" upgrade... Looking forward to some good Plinius discussions...

9200 or Hautonga

I have been keeping my eye out for a Plinius 9200. Has anyone done an A/B between the 9200 and Hautonga?

I had a Plinius SA-100 mated with a pair of Maggie 1.6's. The combo sounded very nice.

I moved up to 3.6's and had to get something a little more powerful to handle the larger panels. I hated to see the SA-100 go but the new owner was very happy with it. I now have 20.1's and would love to hear the 20.1's with a larger Plinius.

Need suggestions

I am replacing my sold equiptmet and was opent suggestions on the best match-up: Plinuis Ref amp or Macintosh 452 or 601 with Sasha Wilson Speakers.
I mostly listen to jazz , R&B , or some CW. I enjoy a rich midrange, solid bass with quick dynamics.

Only when biased to Class 'A' does it get 'very warm'

liddown 12-22-2012 02:55 PM

Nice to find others that understand what the SA-250 is all about... Now, I have completed three things with my SA-250 MkIV this past year. First, I had the first in the USA Gary Morrison (original amp designer) designed signature upgrade (amazing upgrade) installed. Second I switched the amp to a 240VAC circuit, and third I installed premium fuses in the rails and power positions.

In short this completely refreshes the 250 to a current standard. I believe that the 250 has a bit of a roll off in the very top end. This I am thinking was the reason it was so popular in the early days of (bad) digital. With the upgrade the amp is now completely even across the entire range. No loss of the magical midrange and bass. In every way it is in the same league as the newer SA series... I have had mine since 1998, and it is not going anywhere... Heat = Beautiful music :music:

doggiehowser 12-22-2012 09:35 PM

I still like my SA Reference in black :) I figured it should have better heat dissipation.
