Egg cartons
 

Hi all.
I been thinking about getting egg cartons to put on my walls and ceiling.
Do they do much? I have used egg cartons in my old bedroom and don't remember much about them except the sound was dead in the room. Does that make sense? I'm not sure what that means even.

In my living room now there's not much in there so you get this sound behind the sound. Like when talking there's a certain sound behind your voice. I'm not sure what to call this. I think this is a characteristic of all empty spaces?

So I been thinking of buying egg cartons for the space and wonder if this might help my home theater.

Yes egg cartons work, but they are not great in the "looks" department

They diffuse reflections.

and with that being said if one is willing to take the time and be creative I'm sure they could be made to look fine.

The diffusion generated could be great if it's not overdone. Too much diffusion, however, is also not a great thing as it creates confusion. ideally, diffusion is required between the speakers and behind the listening seat only. It is generally not a good idea to use egg cartons because the sound is also damped, which will result in a dead lifeless sound if all the walls are covered.
