What's your favorite 6922?

I've been doing a little tube rolling this week with my Premier 17, which uses 6922-types (6DJ8 and 7308 are equivalent), and was curious what folks like in the way of 6922s.

The Premier 17 as I bought it came with run-of-the-mill Sovtek 6922s, but this tube actually sounds very nice in the Premier 17, with a nice balance of detail and smoothness. I've got two Amperex 7308s and two GE 6DJ8s on loan and have been mixing and matching those, along with the Sovteks, but still undecided on things. Not sure if I'm going to keep the GEs as they have been cryo'd and sometimes cryo'd tubes can have a hardness to them I'm not crazy about.

I've got Ediswan 2492s in my LP70s, and those are really nice, too.

Curious what the rest of you like....

Of the ones I tried I liked the Gold Lion 6922 best so far. I have tried the Sovteks, EH, and JJ. The GL are the most balanced and quitest of the bunch. The price is also relatively sane.

I've tried many in my Lamm 1.2s and like the Telefunkens the best!

Agreed, the telefunken sound is superb. I have used their 12ax7's and they have improved Mac c2300 as well as numerous phono stages.

Recently put in Tele PCC88's into my cj GAT. Nice upgrade and a lot cheaper than the Tele 6922's.

Hi Shane,
Recently got a quote on some Tele PCC88s...might try those.

Thanks, mate!

Sovtek I used for awhile and then switched it to Gold Lion which was an improvement. Really like the idea of Tele and will have to try them out!

In the Steelhead, I have found the Tele to sound best. I just tried some NOS Siemens Silver Shield from the early 70's and while they were linear, quiet and articulate, they lacked the holographic quality of the Tele, at least in my system. I have also used NOS Mullard gold pins, but my recollection was that they were a little too 'tubey' sounding in my system.
Years ago, when I had the ARC SP-10 as my main preamp/phono stage, I went through hundreds and hundreds of tubes, not so much to tweak sound, but just to avoid microphonics. I don't seem to have that problem with any of the 6922 or equivalent tubes that I have been using in the STeelhead. I quickly got rid of the nasty sounding SOvteks that Eva Manley supplied with that unit, though.

I am going to pick up my Matsushita 7DJ8 from the post office today. I will burn it in in and will let you know how it turns out. I have high hopes for this one.
