ET-5 with Hi-Fi Supreme Fuse
 

Any one have try the hi-fi fuse in the preamp?

I was actually thinking about giving it a try. I've got a set of HFTuniing in my magnepans.
I'm not convinced they ever made any significant difference in the speakers, but, I've on occasion been able to talk myself into believing they had. :no::yes:

Do you know which of the fuses in the ET5 could be changed? I thought there was a thread around here awhile back about it. I presume there is a fuse in the rear power block, and there are a couple on the main board, I'm assuming one of those is for the control circuits which presumably there would be no benefit in changing.

I keep thinking about popping the top and having a look, but have just not gotten around to it.

Would be great to hear of someone else having done the leg work on this as to the specific fuses to be changed and the values. :D

I'm in the process of updating the J-River PC at the moment, so I guess it would be a good time to give the preamp a tweak.

I got so sick of messing with tubes last year, I get a cold sweat just thinking about opening up the preamp again.:yuck:

Yes I know what you mean about opening up the preamp cover, I did spoke to Ed regarding the fuse for my ET-5 and have bought the fuse from music direct I should have them by next week and give it a try. Yes the fuse is at the back of the preamp right by the IEC actually there is a spare one that provided by CJ.
The one I bought from music direct is hifi supreme small slow blow 800MA
What tube is in your ET-5 now?

Let me know how it goes with the new fuse, I'd assumed we'd need to replace one inside the chassis also, but maybe a good way to start would be simply with the rear IEC jack fuse.


Long story on the tube situation, abbreviated story and final chapter are that early last year, I bought an EAT, popped it in, liked it right away (as compared to stock CJ) and figured I was done.

Unfortunately it failed in pretty short order (noise)

Attempts to get a replacement meant waiting about 6 months.

In the mean time, I'm sitting there with the preamp top sitting loose, making it easy to play with tubes a bit more. I tried a few low cost ones that were all quite good. I'm trying to remember for sure, but I had two different $200ish NOS tubes that each failed quickly. I had a gold lion that was good, Westinghouse that was very good.

Having gotten sick of messing around I'd have probably just left the GL or WHouse in.

When the EAT did finally arrive, I popped it back in and that was that. I think overall it's the best. I'd hate to have to bet on the difference between it and other tubes. I think it would be hard to find something demonstrably "better". At this level, another great tube might sound a bit different, but I think opinions would vary on picking one as better.

If someone had a specific characteristic they were looking for, that might be one reason to look elsewhere.

Similar to my situation bought EAT pop it in dead right away test with my tube tester,
in the mean time I had tried several including siemen cca, amperex pq d-getter, telefunken cca, and finally got a replacement from EAT but so far the EAT is the most quiet tube and the telefunken cca is next favorite

...I decided to order the fuse also.. cheap enough tweak whether it's any real improvement or not. I've spent far more for nothing. :cry:

and then the cases where things that should not make a difference do, or at least seem to.
'guess that's part of the fun in trying to determine which is which.

popped the hifituning fuse in yesterday..... try as i might, I can't tell one bit of difference. oh well.

At the risk of sounding a little crazy, did you turn it around in the other direction and try it? :scratch2:
