My Vintage 2-Channel System

Awhile back I had an epiphany. Like John Belushi in Blues Brothers I was on a mission... a vintage 2-channel mission.;)

When I first started out on this quest, I had no idea how time consuming it would become. I’m impressed at how well certain gear hold their value. I guess a lot of people my age want to relive the golden era of hi-fi.

It’s taken a bit of time, and I spent a bit more than I had planned, but I finally put together my vintage 2-channel system.

Enough chit-chat, lets get down to business.

My Vintage 2-channel system

Turntable;

Marantz 6200 with an Audio Technica AT90 Cartridge mounted in a Marantz headshell. - This turntable was manufactured between 1976 - 1978. I replaced the belt and will eventually have to replace the needle. But for now, I simply enjoy spinning the wax.

Receiver;

Marantz 2252B - This was manufactured between 1977 - 1979. This beast is rated at 52x2 @ 8 ohms 65x2 @ 4 ohms of “tube like” power. I really like the look, feel and sound of this piece.

Speakers;

Pioneer HPM-100 - These are a 4 way, 4-speaker Bass-Reflex loudspeaker system designed by Bart Locanthi and his team of ex-JBL engineers who designed the famous L100, 4311/12 JBLs and then went to work for Pioneer. These beauties were manufactured between 1976 - 1977.

*Not sure I like the cabinet. But it fits the vintage look, I think. Keeping my eyes open for something else that might grab me.

Waboman,

That is a really nice looking setup. It all looks like it just came out of the box from the factory.

I really like the Marantz gear from that era.

Nice vintage system. It comes down to enjoying the music. Sometimes I look at a system like this and say to myself, this is really all you need. What we have now between expensive components, exotic speakers, power chords and IC can make go through too much moolah. I wish marantz would go back to building receivers like yours; they would sell like hot cakes.

Jeff.......What a nice looking vintage system. Toss in a cassette deck, and it could be 1973 all over again. I'll bet the system sounds pretty darn good. :thumbsup:

Jeff,

I love your new vintage system. Takes me right back there.

There is something really special about playing music "from the day" on a system like that. It just sounds RIGHT!!!

Enjoy. Just need a lava lamp and a pack of zig-zags

Sweet system, I'll bet all your old Pink Floyd, Led Zep and Yes albums sound GREAT on that rig. :banana::banana:

Thanks, guys.:) I had a lot of fun searching, finding and assembling it. Also, I want to give a shout-out to Dan, who kept me inspired and answered some speaker questions.

I had forgotten how good vinyl sounds. I'm spinning some now as a matter of fact.:thumbsup:

I agree, David. Sometimes it's the simple approach that make the music that much more special.
