Cape Cod Theater

Preface:

I will chronicle the progress of my Cape Cod Theater here. This will be a long and arduous task. I will start by posting some shots of the unfinished basement over this weekend.

Construction will begin over the next few weeks. This should prove to be a fun project.

The entire basement will be worked on at the same time; approx 3200'

I will focus on the Theater's progress, as best I can. This will be a sticky thread because I believe it will be very useful for anyone building a dedicated room.

In addition, this will take quite a bit of time (just as "The Room" in Florida did).

Ivan,
Really looking forward to this - it will be fun and educational to see a real first class room put together, from the (under)ground up. I'm sure everyone will get some great tips from your postings, and you certainly will pour years of experience into this effort.

jdandy 06-19-2009 10:17 PM

Ivan.......Great idea. This project will prove educational for all of us. Looking forward to it getting started.

Still-One 06-19-2009 10:48 PM

This will be fun to follow.

Cadillac Kid 06-19-2009 11:02 PM

Maybe you can rig up a time lapse recording of the event. Something like the> The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien - Time Lapse Part 2 - Video - NBC.com

TommyC 06-19-2009 11:11 PM

I cannot wait for this!

I got dizzy & almost had a seizure. :lmao:

hkval 06-19-2009 11:23 PM

This will allow us all to share in the adventure. We Florida residents need to know "What is a Basement??":D
You have over 400 Aficionados who will be reading this documentary on a regular basis. Don't forget to save some time for yourself to enjoy the beach, savor some nice fresh lobsters and smoke a few Cuban Cigars at sunset.

Vintage Pete 06-20-2009 12:00 AM

This will definitely be fun to watch!

I look forward to the first "bare bones" photos...

Pete

streetspirit 06-20-2009 12:11 AM

this will be great reading and yet even better with the pics to show the progress!

1KW 06-20-2009 06:02 AM

Great Idea Ivan  Now set those Strads up and tell us how you like them :D

MC352 06-20-2009 07:29 AM

What, no pictures yet :D

This should be interesting - I am looking forward to it.

mac man 06-20-2009 09:12 AM

:ttiwwp:

Okay I had to do it:D

Masterlu 06-20-2009 07:43 PM

Here we go!

First a trip down stairs.

http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/t...g?t=1245540755

This is where the theater will be located. The three sided wall straight ahead will be the rear of the room.

http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/t...g?t=1245540938

Shot taken from the rear of the room looking forward. There will be walls from the support beam on the right closing in the theater. The door will be on the right wall, dimensions are 16' wide 28' deep 10' height.

Is that a hot water heater that I see in the corner of that last picture? :scratch2:

Masterlu 06-20-2009 07:50 PM

Yes, one of two; that area will be framed off and be the equipment room.

jdandy 06-20-2009 07:50 PM

Ivan.......How large is the electrical service panel that presently serves the house?

Have you considered a tank-less gas water heater? They're much more efficient and rarely break. You'll never run out of hot water either. They've been in use in Europe for 20+ years. When I had my house completely remodeled in 2007 I had one installed. Very nice!

400 amp service.

http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/t...g?t=1245542138

Permits are already in for another 600! That will give me my own transformer too.

I may opt for them, thanks.

Now you're talking, and a dedicated transformer to boot. Sweet.

PHC1 06-20-2009 08:05 PM

Ivan, are you going with QuietRock for drywall?

Yes, that should quench my thirst for current. :D

1000 amps is the max permissible in MA for residential. :lmao:

I think this thread may be the real "Never-Ending Story"

Yes, I recently became a dealer for their products.

Taylode 06-20-2009 09:41 PM

I am most definitely looking forward reading this thread. You may want to make it a sticky.

Plus 1 on that, Dennis!

Masterlu 06-20-2009 10:27 PM

OK, Done!

jdandy 06-20-2009 10:29 PM

The photos are deceiving when considering height. The windows being so close to the floor joists creates the illusion that it is less than 8 feet.

1KW 06-20-2009 10:53 PM

Ivan,

I know it is not my buisness but are those windows the only ones for the whole basement ? If yes can you locate the theater anywhere else in the basement away from the windows ?

I have about 8 more windows in the basement, the Theater will only take up 500' of the 3200' available.

gregswaim 06-20-2009 11:15 PM

Wood floors or carpet for your basement theater?

Custom carpet.

US Blues 06-21-2009 12:12 AM

Thanks for taking us along for the ride. I'm curious how one builds a basement on Cape Cod? :scratch2:

wpines 06-21-2009 08:43 AM

In the ceiling above your HT room, change the drain pipes to cast iron. Plastic drain pipes are LOUD and almost no wrapping or any ceiling system built below them effectively damps the sound. Should be 1,000 bucks, and money well spent, but on the Cape in Prime building season $$$. Stand under those pipes and have someone flush :(

Good tip, I am aready on it. The ceiling will also be covered/filled with "QuietCoat"

QuietCoat | Soundproof Paint

I have used this before with excellent results.

TommyC 06-24-2009 06:45 PM

Nice! I'm looking forward to more pictures!

two dot 06-24-2009 07:41 PM

Good Point, I made sure that all of he plumbing (drain) lines in the new addition and theater room that I am doing all ALL CAST IRON!!!

No plastic pipes in a room you want to be quite!

Barring any unforeseen delays, it looks like construction will begin shortly after July 5th.

Stay Tuned...
