Mobile Fidelity Taking it A Step Further
It looks like MOFI is going another step further in their mastering process. I just saw this today on Music Direct's website....An ad for the 45 RPM Abraxas by Santana. It's listed as an UltraDisc One Step box set. $99.99 for one album....yikes. I love MOFI's products as much as anyone, but $99.99 is a little steep for a single album. I'm curious how much better could they sound than their standard 45 RPM stuff like Dylan's catalogue? The set looks really nice though. Anyone be willing to spend $99.99 on some of these? I'd be willing to maybe try one to see.....have to be a real favorite though. I'm sure we'll see yet another version of Kind of Blue.

I might pay $99 for a rare original pressing, or some special recording not otherwise available, but not for yet another reissue of an old warhorse.

I'm curious and may have to try one. :scratch2:

I think I'd be willing to try one. The problem for me though is that off hand, I can't think of any album I like enough to pay that much for.

I had the opportunity to hear a test pressing at the Newport Show back in June. The On A Higher Note room was demonstrating their system playing some tape, Vanessa Fernandez, When The Levee Breaks (Groove Note). They followed the MOFI demonstration after tape. As the MOFI representative described the process, and what were going to hear, I was skeptical, but the demonstration was something else. I said to myself, this will be cheaper than tape. If it were not for experiencing the demo I probably would not have pre-ordered.

In terms of cost the old MOFI UHQR pressings were a fortune back then, comparatively.
And they were superb |
I think it may be worth it ...

Very late ... Too bad !! |
I think the ultradisk one step process may be good, but for $99 I'm not seeing the value.I have to question Mobile Fidelity's thought process on making 45 RPM albums I for one do not believe the sound improvement is that good and having an album with only approximately 2 songs per side by the time you get comfortable to listen your back changing the album.I'm all for LPs playing at 33 1/3!
