Stillpoints Ultra 5s and Big Monoblocks?
There is an enticing set of Ultra 5s currently in the marketplace. Would those work under (hold) two big monoblocks (Accuphase A200s)? I've tried to figure all of this out via the stillpoints webpage, but the more I look, the more I confuse myself. Of course, most importantly, all thoughts on impact on sound quality is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance. |
and, of course, I don't want to get this size/set if there's another one out there that makes much much more sense. On the other hand, if it would be pretty close, used is always less than new in $$ terms. The A200s weigh about 120 pounds each.
Thanks. |
Jim.......I use four Stillpoints Ultra SS under each McIntosh MC2301 power amplifier, each weighing 116 lbs. The Ultra SS are the way to go, and less money too. There are some in the Marketplace right now.

I was about five minutes too late. On the prowl again.

Four UltraSS worked well under my Lamm M1.2 monoblocks, each on a Mondo Designs amp stand. Stillpoints and stands were both replaced with dedicated SRA stands but the differences are closer than you might expect. I believe Ultra 5's would give even better results.

I have the SS under my Bryston 28b3s. Ultra 5s would seem to be overkill. I think they were designed for big and heavy speakers. I looked at them for my Kef Reference 5s, but used the SS instead. The results were remarkable. [emoji16] |
I have the Ultra 5's under my Mac 601's and found they sound better than the SS. I have plenty of the SS on hand and in comparisons I felt the 5's were substantially better at doing what Stillpoints do. The amps are on maple blocks supported by Maple Shade brass footers.
Interestingly, when I had ARC Reference 250 amps in for review the Stillpoints (only tried 5's) made no difference to my ears while they improved the 601's to such a degree I felt they were close enough in sound to the ARC to not spend the extra green. So goes this hobby. |
