What Reel-to-Reel music are you listening to?

Up front, CCR, Cosmos Factory, 7 1/2 ips pre-recorded original. Sounds damn good.

Bob, that is one sexy GX-400D! I would love hearing "Green Eyed Lady" being played on that vintage beast. :ok:

I had the heads relapped by JRF Magnetics (they maintain all the R-R's for the Library of Congress). I have not played anything back on it since I received the heads back years ago. Just didn't -- don't ask me why. Only thing I did was take a new reel and record Alison Krauss and Union Station LIVE; but, never played it back.

Sitting here today -- the wife is gone thru Monday - so it's crank up time & thought hey, lets try some prerecorded R-R (bought back in the early 70's).

I'm speechless -- they all sound so damn good. Not up to my digital/analog gear; but better than I've heard on some players that's for sure. Soundstage/imaging is pretty darn good. Probably have shaken my head in amazement 25 times this afternoon.

I bought that deck in Okinawa back in 1974 (a US Prefecture then) -- not a darn mark nor scratch on it. All 8 corners sharpe and pointed. Actually, my baby that ties my younger years to audio. Serial number 190 of 200 (40 of 50 that are stereo & dual colors -- silver top and black bottom and blue VU). Akai made more of the 4 channel 400DSS's than 2 channel -- 4 ch was the rave of the day.

I'm smiling!!!!!!!

Bob that is one beautiful deck and congratulations on being able to keep the deck in exceptional condition for so many years. A question, were the original heads a glass-crystal material that extended the life of the head from normal wear? I believe that this head material was one of the advances in this model verses the older model that it replaced. By chance do you have Rush, Moving Pictures on reel to reel in your library? All the best!!! :music:

Thanks -& I agree. Fell in love with it when I saw it in a stereo magazine at the time. I went to the Akai dealer and saw they had the deck there on the floor, but it was a silver only. I asked if they had the dual color and showed him a picture. He said, no they don't have one. I he-hawed around and lusted after it anyways and told him, okay I'll buy it. $708.00 and $15 for the cabled remote.

He brought it out, unpacked it on the floor & lo & behold the dual color. He freaked out -- no markings on the box to indicate silver or silver & black, etc. I was jumping for joy. After I loaded it in the car & went back inside, he checked the others he had. Not a one in the dual color. I was definitely lucky.

That puppy has been all over the world and just fortunate (1) it wasn't stolen during shipments and (2) damaged during.

Yes, Glass & X'tal Ferrite heads.

I don't believe Mercury did a R-R on Rush Moving Pictures. They did a BTO and a few others late in the game, but no Rush that I know of.
