Interesting article. I need to listen to these DAC’s. Plus a whole lot more. His analog to phono cartridges was pretty creative.

Soooo this new Editor now recommends stuff he hasn’t heard. Perfect summary of what’s wrong with the trade.

He reviewed them all.

Hi JBT--Not really interested in harping on this, but I just looked up the DAC 5 Special and the Naim at your earlier suggestion that I was mistaken. I see a preview for the former and not even that for the latter. Please send links of the reviews. Thanks

Let's be very clear. Audio reviewers are not a part of the trade. They report on on the trade.

The trade in this case is the HiFi rag trade.

Not the components, electronics or speaker manufacturers.

As exemplified by WhatHiFi

For the amount spent on the least expensive DAC listed one could purchase a nice TT/TA, phono-preamp, RCM, cartridge and several hundred new (to say nothing of used) LPs and have even better sound. Ah, well............ to each their own (according to their ears).

Of course the best reviewers do reliably report on the trade. But there are more than a few who are indeed part of the trade, and benefit from it.

Well you are right. He did a detailed preview of the Audio Note Dac last October and has yet to release the full review.

As for Naim, he really likes the company and it looks like he hasn't been able to get his hands on one to review it.
