Any Competition Shooters?

Here's a pic of my three bullseye pistols. The revolver is a 6" S&W 586 that's been back to the factory for their master revolver package. Wolff spring-set. Shooting wad-cutters pushed by 4gr of 231. Second pistol is an S&W 41 with the 5" target barrel. It likes Federal Gold Medal 711B. Thankfully, I bought a case of it last year before they cheapened it. Is a Herrett Int'l adjustable target grip. Behind the Model 41 is an S&W 952 long-slide in the rare 2-tone finish. Pushing 115gr RNL Meisters with 5.2gr of WSF. Red-Dot mounted by Dr. Nick at Mountain Competition Pistols. Goes back to him in the fall to get the trigger to 2.5 pounds to meet the NRA centerfire minimum. Needless to say, I feel about S&W like I do about McIntosh..............there are other manufacturers of pistols, but they are just pretenders. Especially revolvers.
Also shoot a WOP AR in service rifle (200yd off-hand, 200yd rapid-fire sitting, 300yd rapid-fire prone & 600yd prone), correct grade '54 SA M-1 in wooden rifle matches & CMP matches, a Remington 40-X rimfire sporter in 200yd silhouette and a Kimber 82G rimfire in 50yd benchrest.
Sporting clays with a CSMC RBL Launch Edition Reserve 20ga. Thinking of shooting high-power sporter with the Model 70 Classic in 30-06. Always another competition to shoot.

I used to live for shooting competition sporting clays and live pigeons.

Shot a lot of different guns, Krieghoff's, Perazzis', Beretta's... Did most of my live bird shooting with SXS competition guns. (M21, Perazzi)

CSMC are fine guns... is Tony still running things?

To the best of my knowledge Tony is still 'the man' at CSMC. With our record wet this past winter and spring it takes a can of OFF to get through our local sporting clays without being covered with ticks. Nothing like a nicely balanced SxS for upland birds and sporting clays. Can become addictive.

You must have quite the machineshop.

Am off to shoot 50ft NRA rimfire 3-position in about an hour. I'm pretty shaky in the off-hand. Luckily, so are my fellow competitors. This is a Remington 40-X with a standard barrel and thumbhole stock. Removed the scope and put on a set of Redfield International sights for the iron-sight events. All the newspaper is from sanding out the barrel-channel in a 700 BDL in which the 40-X will go to meet the 10lb 2oz weight requirement for 200yd silhouette, which is my favorite event. Shoot it the first Saturday of each month. Scopes in the morning and iron-sights in the afternoon. Great fun to knock over those pieces of steel (chickens 50yd, rams 200, turkeys 150 and pigs 100).

Sorry to TC -- but thought you'd be interested in this short story.

My Dad, retired 30 year USCG, started out early in his career as a small arms instructor for the USCG & one of his assignments was the 6 lane, 50 foot range in the basement of the US Treasury (next to the White House & yes, there is an underground walkway from the WH to the Treasury building---SS, WHP, etc used it all the time to get to the range).

There he taught, refined the shooting abilities of, recorded shooting scores of the Secret Service, FBI, WH Police, Treasury Police, Presidential Plane Crew, Army Signal Corps (who supported WH communications), and the CIA (as Langley was in the stages of being built at the tme).

Each entity had their own scoring books maintained by the USCG operators of the range. Monthly reports would be sent to each groups headquarters with name, date of qualifying, and score.

He reported that when he reported to the range on day 1 and was being orientated to the operation, he was told, now Carl we have some CIA folks that drop in for qualifying or just to shoot. We record their scores in the CCO book. As he was being told this, he responded and said, who the hell is the CIA. When informed he asked what was CCO and was informed they refer to them as Chief Coordinators Office personnel.

The SS had 2 civilians in the ammo room who made their (SS) own 38 ammo. These two also maintained their weapons for maintenance. The USCG ordered ammo for everyone else (22, 38 and 45).

When he was there, he was heavilly involved with being a member of the USCG Headquarters pistol team and I recall as a kid, every weekend he was gone to a match in the area. Either to somewhere in VA/MD. Pistol teams flourished in those days amoungst the groups & local/state police agencies.

He tells me he was an NRA Master Shooter and at that level, he said to win matches was extremely tough -- adding to say, some of those shooters in his class were very, very good. I asked him yesterday, did he save any of his trophies -- only one he tells me (which I haven't seen in 40 years) and all his patches -- only has a couple in a shoe box. He wishes he saved all that stuff -- but being in the military, you move so often, that eventually, stuff gets tossed).

One last thing -- I was 11 when he was assigned to the range and enjoyed going down there (walking by armed Treasury guards w/12 gauge shotguns, sitting in "cells" surrounded by stacks of paper money & coins). Of course, I did plenty of shooting when I was able to tag along for a day. It was alot of fun & got my first taste of making ammo -- from pouring the lead to encasement.

I still have his match 45 which he gave me years ago.

Yes.....ineteresting story. You should drop up to Butner (few miles north of you) and join in the fun. Put that match .45 to work.

Short very poorly in the 50ft event (4th out of 7). But we decided to also shoot an impromptu 100yd mini-Palma match and I managed to win that.

I just may do that once I settle down from traveling/testing & like today, yardwork & honey-do's. Will contact you for the specifics.

I'd love to give it a "shot."

Congrats on the mini-Palma match -- what was the weapon used?

Bob

vintage_tube 06-20-2010 03:56 AM

FYI, I asked my Dad about the specifics of the 45 match he gave me (he probably told me, I just forgot).

He built it from a military 45, special sights, grips, springs, and I asked about the tigger as to me it is a hair trigger. He said during match shooting back then (maybe today as well), the trigger could not be less than 2.5 or 3 pounds pull. He believe this is set up for 3 pounds (whereas a GI 45 is around 6+).

I also recall watching TV as a kid, and he'd be sitting on the couch with an unloaded pistol, aiming at something on the wall and slowly squeezing the trigger -- not sure if he was actually dry firing as don't recall the hammer hitting, but know he did this for hours, as he watched the black n' white.

Now and then I'd watch him take aim, like at a match, and sight in whatever he took aim at on the far wall, and wonder how he squeezes the trigger w/o any movement during or after? Now & then he'd hand me the pistol which weighed more than my right arm, or so it seemed, and concentrating as hard as an 11 year old could, try to replicate the precision -- nope, couldn't do it. I missed by a country mile or so (we'd say).

That's the key to being a good pistol shooter. Practice, practice, practice................ Good conditioning is another big plus. Just like any other sport. Any off-hand shooting sport requires the same. Benchrest does not require the same level of conditioning, but does require the same level of practice and dedication.

Thanks. Though I would hardly call it a waapon, any more than a racquet is in tennis or a putter in golf (though all could be used as such). I was shooting a Remington 40-X with the medium contour target barrel and Redfield International sights, front and rear with a Lee Shaver insert and RWS Rifle Target ammo. It gets pretty specific with rimfire rifles, as they only shoot specific ammo well. For instance, the next 40-X might shot the RWS poorly and like the SK or Eley ammo. Definitely 'horses for course' in rimfire rifle competition.

If anyone is interested in shooting rimfire rifle competition, the CMP is selling Kimber 82G rifles, with excellent iron sights, for $600 plus shipping. As they are military surplus rifles (though they are new and unused) so can ship directly to you and not go through an FFL in most states (no longer in NJ as of about 2-months ago).

Shot in our bullseye pistol league last night and shot a personal best for the year. Even managed to win the event. But, that was likely the result of the 90+ temp and the fact that I like the heat and my fellow competitors (11 of us - usually 18-20 when not so hot) seemed a bit wilted. Cools off a bit and I'll be back to mid-pack. Service rifle this Sunday. Thankfully, it starts at 8:00 a.m., so should only be 85, or so, by the time we finish.

Season has begun. 200yd rimfire silhouette last Saturday (shot my Winchester 1885 Low Wall - did well). Service rifle last Sunday (did poorly). Bullseye was Wednesday (not too bad). CMP M-1 match is tomorrow. All great fun.

love to hear and see the gun discussion gents, myself, I shot benchrest for years (6PPC) as well as long range varmint hunting....... .243 ackley, .223, .22-250, .220 swift

Right now I'm enjoying sporting clays with my two Browning O'U's and my Benelli Semi-auto

Formerly YB-2 08-24-2011 07:46 PM

Have started to get a bit more serious about BPCR & high power silhouette. Just ordered an MVA 28" 6x scope for my Winchester 1885 High Wall in 38-56. Both disciplines are shot at 200/300/385/500 meters. BPCR is off-hand at 200, with all else shot off of sticks. High power is all off-hand. My new Remington M700 CDL in 7mm-08 should be here by the end of the week. Will shoot it 'as-is' for the rest of this season, then have the action trued and bedded and the trigger set for next season. That assumes that it is a standard M700 for accuracy. Occasionally one doesn't shoot, but Remington will generally swap it for another. Will be using a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 scope and competing in the the hunter class.

Makado463 - just noticed your locale. Shot 500m silhouette at the Atglen club this week and will be shooting the BPCR silhouette at Shippensburg next month. Great fun and a real challenge. We shoot 200m rimfire and BPCR silhouette at Quinton Sportsman, outside of Bridgeton, NJ on the first & second Saturdays of the month. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. PM me if might be interested.

'YB' , I know Atglen well, been a member there for over thirty years. 'tuned' my ackley up on the 500 meter range, zeroed @ 300 yds, longest kill on a 'whistle pig'.......794 yds. When I'm home I shoot sporting clays there on the first, third Sundays of the month, Oxford on the even Sundays.

I've sold all my varmint rigs except my custom .243 ackley and my .223 Cooper. Haven't shot a ground hog in two years.

Going out for a round of sporting clays next Wednesday. Always fun, but my 'wing-shooting' is very suspect these days.

On the positive side, I did get second in my BPCR silhouette class at the last shoot of the year at Shippensburg. Hoping for good things this season. Here is a pic of my new C. Sharps High Wall. Having the barrel d&t'd for a 28" MVA scope so can shoot both open and scoped classes.

Here is a link to Robert Whitley's website and offerings. His uppers are built by Fred Szablewski, who is a well-known local competition bolt/space-gun buiilder. Fred won the M-1 Seniors match at Camp Perry (sort of like our nat'l championships) in 2009. He and Robert are both 'distinguished' CMP shooters.

Will be shooting the "frosty nutz" match with the space-gun at the South Jersey Shooting Club the second Sunday of Jan/Feb/March and all are welcome to join in the fun. It is an 'any-gun/any sight/any position' match, including using front rests, etc. Not sure if the 'frosty nutz' refers to our mental capacity for shooting in the winter or another part of our anatomy. ;)
http://sjerseyshootingclub.com/

Shot a 580-19X today. Starting to get a feeling for the gun.

Formerly YB-2 02-11-2012 08:43 PM

All right........next 'frozen nutz' match in the morning. Snow & ice & rain at the moment. Temp dropping lout the bottom and wind picking up in a couple of hours. Wind chill in the low teens at first light in morning and still in the low-20s by the time we touch off the first round. Just what the doctor ordered for the hardcore match shooter. Should give my new insullated boots a good workout. The worst part will be that 300yd walk down to score and post targets. Brrrrrrrrr............ When its all said and done and I walk back through the door my wife will look at me and say, "you're nutz".

Thank you. Though the idiot (Dale Woody at Gun Fancy) who did the final assembly did not stone the backside of the lever and you can see the mark it left in the side of the receiver when opened. Plus, his bluing work is sorry under close inspection and I'll have to eventually have it redone. He did, however, do a good job on the engraving. The case-color work was not his. He definitely will not be getting the 1885 Low Wall I'm having refurbished.

Here is a pic of my latest Hepburn restoration "as received" in .22 Lovell (had been 'varmintized') and as it looks now in 38-50. Barrel bored to 38cal and rifled in a 13" twist, receiver engraved & case-colored, wood redone to as close as possible to an original configuration (was an inch too short so have the extra recoil pad to lengthen the pull). Will be shooting in a couple of matches later this month (one target & one silhouette). While have the wood checkered this winter while we are shooting sporting clays.
A bit more information. Is an original 1879 Remington #3, or more commonly known as a "Hepburn", named for LLHepburn, the designer of the rifle. This was the peak of Creedmoor shooting (800, 900, 1000yd) and was named for the range, which was located near the south shore of Long Island. Shooting matches were one of the largest spectator sports of era (starting shortly after the Civil War to about WW1). This particular rifle was likely made around 1890, but Remington keep poor records and went in and out of business several times until well in the middle of the 20th century. This one is chambered in 38-50 Remington, which is one of the more accurate cartridges for shooting black powder these days. I purchase 'varmintized' old single-shot rifles and restore them to something resembling their original glory. LLHepburn was a not only a noted barrel maker (where he started), but also designed the well known line of Marlin lever-action rifles that are still being built today. He was also a crack-shot and a member of the U.S. Creedmoor team for a number of years. From the start, when we were challenged by the then world champion Irish team, we dominated the matches, though the scores were often very close. As close as a single-point win out of a total of ~1600 points.

Been having a good season thus far. Won the Ohio Valley Regional 2-day match in June and was 3rd in class (AAA) and 17th overall at the Nationals in Raton, NM last month (receiving my award in the pic). Have also done well in several 1-day and a couple of 2-day matches, placing 1st or 2nd in class. Another 2-day match at the end of the month in KY, then the Eastern National 4-day match in Sept and will finish the season with the 4-day SE Regional in Canton, GA in October. Then back to sporting clays.

I've owned both Model 41 cmg pistols (long and bull barrel), my most cherished pistols. I bought them back in the 70's for a song and a dance, today they are $1600.00 ea. Also had a 686 which I regret, to this day, selling. I recently bought a S&W Victory 22, it shoots fantastic, just a sweetheart. Not quite finished as well as the 41 but all stainless and has the fiber-optic sights.

The S&W Model 41 is truly a wonderful pistol. Only wish I could shoot one well enough to justify owning. I'm just not much of a pistol shot.
