What Replaces Oppo?
Now that Oppo is no longer making new 4K players, who makes one that can be comparable? Where do we turn?
|
Any rumors from Denon?
|
Streaming.
|
For now the best alternative is the Kaleidescape Strato. Nothing beats it on convenience or quality and K is trying to bring date and day releases.

You still can purchase the current model Oppo’s. They are going to continue support and firmware just halting R&D for new products. At least that’s my understanding. That said as an alternative I would look to Sony, likely offering from their ES line. Also would check out Pioneer Elite. |
Oppo thinking about one more production run of 205. There is a sign up sheet listed to leave contact info, email. Just thought I would pass it along.

Is the Kaleidascape a universal disc player? |
Cambridge CXUHD or the upcoming Panasonic UB9000 (no SACD though) are two closest competition.
|
I know the future will be streaming, but I want to be able to play my DVD-A and 5.0 SACD albums too in the future...

I really do appreciate the Oppo's dual HDMI outputs. One for audio only. Saved me a lot of money by not having to upgrade to a 4K AVR. I'm not aware of any other manufacturer that took the time to put that feature in their units.
I also think there are a lot (a whole lot) of people like myself that will continue to insist upon purchasing physical media. Streaming may be fine, and indeed the future, but like vinyl and CD's have proved, there will remain a healthy market for disc spinners. Perhaps in time more credible information will come forward giving more detail to Oppo's horrific decision. |

You can get the Alto but it is not 4k. What you can do though if you buy or own the physical discs is use the ultra-violet or movies anywhere code/voucher, pay a bit more and download the movie on your system. |

Ok, so not a disc player and therefore not a substitute for the Oppo. Apples and oranges. I think those that are in the market for an Oppo are more interested in the ability to play 4K discs, Blu-ray and SACD. |

You can purchae the disc from the K shop and have it on your system in half an hour. Or as mentioned if you own the disc you just you the code to download it. Quality is identical to Oppo or even better. Not really a substitute but a much better solution. Nobody has complained after they experienced it. Just get a cheap player for those emergency disc viewings where you cannot wait half an hour to download the movie. [emoji4] |
You could get the Kscape M700 Disc Vault. It stores 320 physical discs, and plays them. This includes the M Class player.

If I remember correctly, KALEIDESCAPE is pricey.

If you buy a 4k BD with a movie anywhere voucher or a movie anywhere streaming movie then you can download it from the K store at the full 4k BD quality. Same with ultra violet. |

One of the many things I like about the Oppo players is that they have discrete analog audio outputs for up to 7.1 Surround. Movie audio streamed on my Smart TV is fed to my McIntosh MX120 via optical cable. Of course I'm unfamiliar with all of the streaming devices so it's very possible that some of the available devices will do a better job than my Smart TV. |

I believe for the ones that own one, it will last longer then you will use it and probably even yourself - these are very well built units and also used in many a high dollar components, like MSB.
Back in the day, I bought Pioneer Elite DVD players, with my Elite plasmas (all still in use) which was a decent amount of $ outlay and still have 3 tv systems in the home - I honestly don’t think I have ever watched disc movies on any of them and have a decent sized library if that even makes sense, the weekly go to has been Apple TV - streaming. |
What Replaces Oppo?
4K steaming where the live is impossible, so I guess I‘ ll be buying physical media for a while longer.

I do believe you Ivan, but I have hundreds of 5.0 SACDs and tens of DVD-As. Does the Kaleidescape load/play/stream those? I know even 5.0 DSD-streaming will arrive in a couple of years, but in the mean time spinning those silver discs seems like the handiest and cheapest way... |

I have 1,000's of redbook discs, Blu-rays and SACDs and want to keep playing them. Several are single-layer SACDs so must be played on an SACD player. |
I had my name on the Oppo site for notification if they do another production run of the 205. Yesterday, they sent out a confirmation email to see if I am still interested.

The Australian distributor said with the preorders - all Oppo 205s are completely sold out.
|
Dan,
I don't need one either. I have both a 203 and a 205, but I think I will buy another 205 for a backup. |
My dealer gave me a very good price on a Mc theater system, MC 207, MX 122, and the MVP 901 (includes the $5500 from Mc and a generous discount), but I cannot pull the trigger on the combination. The MVP 901 is just a Blu-ray player, and, to me, a step backward in technology. Fortunately, the email from Oppo came as I was pondering the Mc deal.

For video performance the upcoming Panasonic 9000 will probably be the successor however it won't play SACD or DVD-A. For those formats will there actually be any manufacturers' players left that support both formats going forward?
|
The best hope I see would be if Yamaha replaces their BD-A1060 player with a 4K Ultra HD player, like Oppo did with the 205.
The Yamaha BD-A1060 only upscales to 4K, but plays SACD/DVDA, and has balanced outputs. |

Will the 203 and 205 be upgradable to HDR10+? If not it's time to move on if you're interested in the latest and greatest.
