Will the W20 remain in the lineup or be replaced soon?

Hi:
Looking at upgrading from the n100h to the W20 and had a question.
Is the W20 remaining as current in the Aurender lineup or is it likely to be replaced soon?
Before spending the dollars required for the W20 I wanted to find out if anybody expects it t be replaced soon. I'd hate to buy it and find it's obsolete within a short period of time. I understand there are no guarantees so I wanted to ask those closer to Aurender than I am if any word about a new top model was in the air.
I love my n100h and am excited about this upgrade.
Thanks.

I would definitely check with your local dealer or even call Aurender. AS of now, only the A10 can fully decode MQA. Their will be an update for the N10 and N100 to add what Aurender calls MQA-Lite.

The W20 is highly rated. But I would do a lot of research before I spent $17K.

One can never really stay totally future proof but it seems you should ask the tough questions to Aurender and your dealer.

I know I would.

Good luck.

Hi guys:
Yeah, I know we can't predict when a piece will be relplaced.
I was trying to find out if anybody with an ear on Aurender had any "special insights."
Yes, it's a big spend given no MQA and the rapid obselenense of computer based devices.
Just seeing if I can get the level of comfort I need on this one.

FWIW, Dealers are usually the last to find these things out.

We're able to predict Apple and Nikon upgrades so this makes sense to ask.

Aurender probably isn't a big enough company to have a rumor website where info gets leaked.

I have not heard of any replacement or change to the W20. Regardless of what's next, it will still be relevant for some time IMO. I would not look at the W20 unless you plan to use an external clock, the money saved could be better spent elsewhere. The delta between the n10 and w20 isn't that great until a clock is added.

Thanks, SuperDave.
A very helpful response.
Is there a preferred clock users are pleased with?

docmd2010 01-26-2018 04:19 PM

Esoteric seems to be the go to clock on this forum, but there are others such as cybershaft and dCs which are excellent as well.

This question is for Mark (SCAudiophile). He has extensive knowledge about clocks and their capabilities. The G-01 is the only clock I have used and have no other reference to compare other than brief listening sessions of DCS and MSB. With MSB, the clock is internal, and it was by far the best sounding. Hard to determine if the benefits were coming from the dac or the clock inside but it was the best I've heard as it should be for 90K. I've read hi praise for CyberShaft at a much more reasonable price point. Having had the clock for a few years, I wouldn't want to be without it. Its difficult to articulate what it does, but I think the improved accuracy makes music a bit more effortless and timbre, to my ears, is much more believable while removing the digital edge I used to hear.

Mutec have some nice clock options now also, Mutec 3+ and REF10

W20 Released 5 years ago, price increased.

Not new implementations forthcoming either.

I would guess they have too much stock on hand of the W20.

Thanks SuperDave,

Been looking at getting a W20. Also was considering G-01 for my K - 01xs, but wondering if overkill given the multiple clock outputs. Now I have justification to buy both:)

I wonder If I get a dCS Rossini DAC + dCS's External Clock,.... can I use the dCS's External clock to clock also the W20 ?

meltemi 08-20-2018 10:40 AM

You can either use a word clock signal from any DAC or Master Clock which has a word clock output,
or you can directly use a 10MHz reference clock like the Mutec Ref. 10.

The answer is yes if the DCS clock has an unused 75ohm clock output.

The Rossini clock does have a 3rd output that could be used with a transport or other device. The only issue is that you would have to set the rate via RS 232 to 44 or 48 to match the other device. I believe it defaults back to 44.1 when powered off.

Using the Rossini Player or DAC and Clock with other sources
The Clock can be used with other sources that have a Word Clock Input and can accept standard word clock. The setup is basically the same as for the Transport on the previous page.
The frequency at Output 3 can be changed to either 48 or 44.1kHz by RS232 commands to match changing data rates. The data rate must be an exact multiple of this to comply with Rule 2.
Output 3 resets to 44.1kHz when the Clock powers up.
Other digital audio sources that do not have a Word Clock Input, such as Blu-Ray
players or satellite receivers, cannot be locked to the Rossini Clock.
To comply with Rule 1, the Player / DAC input driven by these sources must be set to
Unit Settings > Sync Mode > Audio.

The Aurender W20 server can control the frequency of the Rossini Clock’s Output 3 via their RS232
control dongle. Please see the W20 manual for details.

Few weeks ago, I was hoping for a W20 successor, but now that I have bought a (used) W20... I hope the successor will not come soon ! ;-) .
