Wyred for Sound DAC-2 upgrades available

This post is a combination heads-up and inquiry....

I recently contacted Wyred for Sound by phone and spoke to a fellow in tech support regarding the trigger functionalities on my DAC-2. During that discussion,
I learned that there were upgrades coming available for the unit, by sending the unit in for modification.

In visiting the site today I see that the upgrades have now been officially rolled out, as the fellow I spoke to indicated would happen shortly.

The first upgrade is a DSD modification that accomplishes the following:

•DSD64 and DSD128 compatibility via USB
•Max USB resolution increased to 32 bit 384kHz
•Driverless for Mac and Linux
•Integer mode compatible
•Galvanic isolation

The cost of this upgrade is $350.
New "DSD" units now retail at $1599.

The second available upgrade, called the SE ("special edition") accomplishes the following:

•Custom Vishay Z-Foil resistors (0.1% tolerance and a +/-0.5ppm/°C)
•Ultra-low noise discrete regulators (100+ times quieter and faster than the stock regulator)
•Ultra-fast recovery Shottkey diodes
•Premium grade inductors
•Rhodium plated Furutech fuse
•Green OLED display for input, sample rate, volume control, and configuration viewing
•DSD 64 and DSD 128 compatibility via USB
•Max USB resolution increased to 32 bit 384kHz
•Driverless for Mac and Linux
•Integer mode compatible
•Galvanic isolation

The cost of this upgrade is $1,250. Pricey for sure, but it is oh, so intriguing.... :scratch2:

New "SE" units now retail at $2499.

The procedures for having your existing unit upgraded are available on the W4S site.

I'm wondering if anyone here who owns a DAC-2 has upgraded their unit and if so, what are your impressions of the results?
I'd like to know, and I am sure others will be interested as well.

I have no problem finding it Dan. That's where I got all the information. I didn't want to post active links and I tried to post it without http but I guess I left in the
www. so it was still trying to show them active. I shouldn't have even asked the question and left my post as it is above.

Now let's see if we can get this thread back on track....

I kind of like the green display that comes with the SE upgrade:

I'm almost afraid to hear the comments.
I just a few weeks back sold my trusty W4S DAC-2.

The DAC-2 was the first DAC I'd owned that really convinced me that File-Based music playback had legs.

I wish wish wish I'd have known about the coming updates.
I'd never part with my D-07X, but would have been nice to have both!

Rayooo....oh boy, that may have been a mistake, depending. I anxiously await the comments. The price is kind of steep, but discussing it with the guy from W4S was definitely getting my interest. As to the price he said well, to improve the already excellent DAC-2 took some doing. There seems to be a ring of truth in those words....

...and to make matters worse, I also feel bad for not supporting W4S.
Here they go and do the right thing, build an updated version, include the early adopters with an upgrade option....

Oh well, I'll be looking to find a way to do business with them again in the future. With all the Anti-Sabre32 sentiment around, they could have also ditched the DAC-2 altogether.

I don't hear all that much anti-Sabre 32 sentiment, at least not around here. McIntosh and Oppo didn't utilize the ESS 9018 in their premium players just for grins. There will always be individual opinions, such is life. But I love my stock DAC-2...my ultimate goal now would be to have the mod done (pending positive reviews of course...) and to upgrade my McIntosh MCD7009 to an MCD1000 transport. I'd be in heaven then.

I'm also very tempted to update the one I own........ I'll make up mind after I'm done with my DIY media player project. It damn near made me sell my MDA1000!!!

I just sent mine in today for the full SE upgrade - I'll report back here as to what I notice sonically.

Here's what I read so far

"Some improvements could be summarized as improved air, imaging and space in the soundstage. There is also a more organic and natural presentation while keeping all of the normal detail that the stock unit produces. In the test system that I listened to I could pick up on any changes in the lower frequencies."
