Wilson and Stillpoints
I am seriously considering placing either Stillpoint Ultra SS or Stillpoint 5 isolation supports under my Sophia 2's, in place of the current brass spikes. I know that at least one member has done so. My questions are:
1) Does floor/carpet matter a lot? (I have Berber carpet over concrete) 2) Is the 5 worth the much bigger bucks? 3) Screwed on or narrow cup up (which makes me worry about stability)? 4) Is isolation under a Wilson heresy? (:D, this last question is kidding, if it works I am interested). |
Jacob Heilbrunn put Stillpoints under his XLF's and swears by them. I heard them before and after, and the difference was remarkable.

Interesting read. Seems to be a topic that brings the haters out, too. I am already firmly in the "isolation helps" camp. :)

2) Imo, the Ultra5s are definitely worth the extra dinero for speakers. And if you upgrade speakers the 5s will move to the new ones. (Get a set of four UltraSS for your amp(s) - you will not be dissapointed.) 3) Not sure about the question. SPs have an adapter - one end screws into Stillpoint footer and the other end into speaker - designed for Wilsons. This also allows you to level precisely the speaker. To be sure I'd shoot them an e-mail specifically about an adapter for your Sophia 2s. The picture in the TAS linked article (above) shows proper installation. 4) Heresy? Every component operates within the context of a subsystem and the Stillpoints-Wilson pairing is synergistically orthodoxical. :D I have similar to your berber over concrete. Works great! The SPs are very effective, no stability issues. Pricey, yeah, but once they were in place I had no thoughts about taking them out. http://www.audioaficionado.org/membe...der-alexia.jpg Ultra5s under Alexias |
I am also considering a set of Ultra SS footers for my Sasha 2s. I was thinking of also getting the Ultra SS Bases since the overall height with the SS would be close to the height of the stock spikes. With this setup can I think I can pass on the Hard Hats. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I found it interesting also, and sent them an email to carry the line.

When Jacob put me in touch with Stillpoints to get a set under my Alexias, it turned out their nearest dealer was 2 1/2 hours away, in Philadelphia. Yet I was told the dealer would install them for me, and help recalibrate the Alexias, which I thought was pretty damn extraordinary customer service.
I've been too busy with business travel this summer to have been able to set up the Stillpoints under the Alexias yet, but it's on my To Do list for the fall. Sent from my iPad using A.Aficionado |
Dang, starting to get the itch bad. :scratch2:

I recently installed ultra SS's with ultra bases under my Alexia's. With the ultra bases you can adjust the height easier and they sit better on the floor. I have carpet and the weight of the Alexia settles these in just fine. I removed the hats and used the hardware to screw these directly into my Alexia's. I have stillpoints under most of my equipment now. I have the ultra 5's under my amp and SS's under everything else. I even put three SS's under each of my transparent ref speaker networks. I have the SS's under my theta preamp, under all my transparent power conditioners, and under my aurender xl 100 music player. I carefully listened with and without stillpoints in all of these areas and there was obvious improvement in every place I put them. Better bass, better instrument sound and separation, cleaner voices, cleaner soundstage, less distortion. I can't find anything negative to say. I give them a high recommendation.
