Playing SACD audio on old equipment
As we recently moved to a new home, we wanted something decent to handle our old DVDs and our [newer] Blu-ray Discs. After the obligatory discussion with the "expert" at Best Buy, we decided to give the Sony UBP-X800 a try. I realize that this is an audio discussion board, but technologies have been mixing together since the advent of home theater sound and this is no exception.
As we were setting up our old solid state stereo equipment in the new place, we dusted off and hooked our old Denon CDR-W1500 (with HDCD capability) ... and, after rediscovering some of our old HDCDs -- I.E., Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon -- I decided that I wanted to try out the SACD feature that came with our new Sony UBP-X800. The problem seems to be that the UBP-X800 has only one AUDIO ONLY rear connector on it, and it is an HDMI type connector. As our old stereo equipment is hooked up via RCA connectors, for the most part, I'd like to get some advice on how we might go about hearing the SACD audio signal available at the rear of the new UBP-X800. I know that the SACD format has been around a very long time, but HDMI hasn't ... so I'm trying to wrap my brain around what it will take to accomplish our goal of listening to [true] SACD music on our old Mac equipment. By the way, we don't have ISP service here yet, so we're stuck with a mobile phone hotspot for now. Consequently, we cannot avail ourselves to the advice available via video (YouTube). I trust that you understand, and thank you for your time. |
Hi Bill...you can purchase an HDMI to RCA converter.

Will that decode the encrypted SACD-signal? I send the digital SACD-signal from my Oppo to my Marantz processor, and that works well. I understand not all AV-receivers and -processors offer this possibility. |

1)Return the Sony and get a player with analog audio outputs in addition to HDMI. 2)Send it via HDMI to an AVR with DSD capability. 3)Get a dongle/convertor box that will accept the SACD signal in PCM form (a setting in the player) and extract that to analog and/or S/PDIF. |

This thing is perfect
http://www.bryston.com/products/digi...dio/BDA-3.html Bryston BDA-3 takes HDMI DSD and converts DSD to analog. Done. But yeah - might be overkill. I'd recommend a Pioneer LX500 UHD universal player. It sounds amazing and has that sweet AKM4490 DAC. https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/P...yers/UDP-LX500 https://www.audionet.com.tw/data/att...oxm4zokkvv.jpg |
Reviving an Old Thread
DoggieHowser......If you happen to [ever] see this, I was wondering if you have any updated recommendations related to this thread's topic? Once again, we have some SACD type CDs that we would like to enjoy, but the Sony UDP-X800 we own has only (2) HDMI receptacles on its rear panel, so using this particular blu ray player as a source for SACD audio is problematic.
I researched both of the links you kindly provided and, put simply, the DAC is too expensive ... but the Pioneer unit you linked me to is more like it. Considering the pace of technology, do you have a newer and/or better recommendation now? Thanks for your time... |
The two Sony models above yours are less expensive than the Pioneer (I think) and have RCA outputs on the back.
The numbers on those Sony’s are 1000 and 1100, I believe. Apologies if someone already suggested those. |
