A reasonably priced alternative is the sonicTransporter i5 from Small Green Computer. For about $1400 you get a Roon ready unit with a 2TB SSD drive. This is a great option if you have a Roon ready DAC.

Good thought, but does not have CD ripping capabilities.

Guess one could simply attach a CD/DVD ROM drive for $50 and install dBPoweramp...

☝️☝️ This. Exactly. That is a MUCH better way to rip.

Think of having a music player with with built-in CD ripper as a bicycle with training wheels. Sooner or later you will outgrow it. [emoji3]

+1

I connect one to my MacBook Pro and drag the files to the sonicTransporter

Again thanks to all for the information. Some good thoughts here and some gear I am not familiar with.
Lots to think about and learn.

I have a Mac mini with Nas SSD drives with roon server running on it. You can get a external CD drive (79$) and burn via iTunes directly to your Nas/external drive in a lossless format.

Interesting set-up. What are you using for a NAS? A stand-alone unit or a USB drive connected to the Mini?

It's an Synology slim version with SSD drive that I mount on the Mac mini.

Bluesound Vault 2 is only $1199 and feature packed. It'll do everything the OP said he wanted.
