It was love at first listen for me. Had to have the SLI-80!

I have one of these in a second system. When they were made, the price tag was very high for a receiver. Apparently, Denon's marketing looked at separates because they were at a price point where they could do so, but their research indicated that the market wanted a one box receiver.

I want to repurpose mine for HT and use an Oppo 103 or 105 as a source.

Does anyone know if the 5800 is stable with a 4 ohm load? It is rated at 6 ohms but not 4. I normally would not worry because I do not drive 2 channel that hard, but this is for theater and that tends to be more demanding.

Totally stable at 4 ohms.... I ran it for years (and at high HT Volume) with my 4 ohm M&K S150/ss150 setup in 7.1. I still have the M&K's too. They are running a HT with a Denon AVR-4311ci and they continue to do a great job.

5800 is a decent machine. Try the HPs output. I have the AVP8000 and it has a great HPs output.

Good to hear that it can handle 4 ohms with ease. I guess I just need to lug it downstairs and see for myself.

528, what do you mean by HP?

He means Head Phones. The 5800 is adequate for them. It will do in a pinch but I would not want it to be my primary headphone amp.

I have a 5800 that I use in a test rig. It's a beast of a unit. and well worth reintroducing into a 2ch or Hometheater setup. Plug in an Oppo 103 and it's like your breathed new life back into the unit. the DAC is still very capable as well. It's a solid unit all around. No HDMI required with the Oppo either. There are tons of ways to incorporate and utilize the 5800 with a little imagination. Airport express into one of the toslink digitial inputs for high quality streaming is just one of many ways to squeeze additional life out of this unit.

Glad to see a few more of these getting resurrected and put back to work.

Just trying to amortize the $4k I invested way back when!

Found my 5803 while cleaning out the garage. This AVR was the beast during its time. When the kids are off to college, it may find its way back into the house.

I've always loved Denon. Before I got into higher end brands I always swore by them. Rock solid and never had and issue with any of their equipment.
