Home machine shop

Lucky guy that I am, I work at home (repairing high end clarinets) which allows me to have this in my basement. I am constantly thinking, "How can anyone do anything around the house without a machine shop?" Disclaimer: it's not always this clean!

Beautiful equipment. One of my fondest memories of high school was grade 9 machine shop and learning the basics of how to use a lathe. Of course nowhere near the caliber of your machine but a great learning experience.

I had metal shop and wood shop in junior high school.

Do they even offer it anymore?

I seem to recall it was mandatory.

PS> When the wife complains about acoustic panels in the family room, would you rather one of these?

That is the one thing I miss most about changing my career, but I did not have much of a choice. After being a Toolmaker and Machine Designer for close to 25 years and always having the shop at my fingertips, I am reduced to a vise, hand drill and files. I have been selling off most of my tools but still have a few nice items left.

Very cool to have all that in your basement. When I was about 17, I met a guy who had a similar setup, not as large, who made scale working models of Steam Train Locomotives and that partly influenced me to be a Toolmaker.

I think it should be.

I know the local community college had a fantastic, fully equipped machine shop and offered courses in machine tool technology with a very comprehensive program. They dropped it because of lack of interest and sold all the equipment at auction. Broke my heart.

I'm thinking and hoping that with a new emphasis on manufacturing in this country we will see a resurgence of hand skill development and interest in making things. Kids with that natural inclination need a place and teachers to expose them to the possibilities.

Yeah I miss being able to whip out something on my lathe whenever I needed to. After 40 some years and 35 spent on CNC lathes, I still go over to my buddies shop and make something simple if I need it. He has nothing as nice as your setup.

You could always tell when my boss was going on vacation, the guys would start to come by with their little projects for me to work on while the boss was away. Always seemed like the jobs had some kind of odd ball thread that they needed put on a part. That was the fun part.
