Depending on age and condition that is a fair price. Make sure you check for any buzzing at high volumes especially in the bass region. Most MG1.6's are OK, but it is worth a check. Due to their age the MGIII/IIIa's are more subject to the de-laminating voice coil issue, which is repairable as long as the mylar is not damaged. The 1.6QR's use the Quasi Ribbon tweeter, and are a two way design. They are a bit more in your face than the three way MGIII and IIIa's with the true ribbon tweeter. Don't get me wrong the 1.6's are a very good speaker, but I prefer the MGIIIa true ribbon tweeter and the three way configuration, which is much smoother IMHO. Either speaker will satisfy!

Jim

THe MGIIIa's have no problems with buzzing now. They voice coils have been serviced, tweeters are fine.

I was not commenting on your MGIIIa's, just offering general information. As they have been attended to, they would make an outstanding alternative to the MG1.6 at your price.

Jim

Guys, It make me feel good to see a nice exchange on the strengths and weaknesses of any speaker. One of these days you local guys are going to have to give me turn with the Maggies!

Gordon,
we really need to get together and listen to some music. It would be very interesting to compare our rigs. I replaced the MG1.6's with a pair of M/L SL3's driving them with one Acurus A200, and liked them but thought they were a bit dry. I missed the Maggie sound, so I got a line on my MGIIIa's and rebuilt them with new tweeters and used the Peter Gunn method to repair the voice coils. My goal was the MG3.6's and I might still get there, but the refurb then the Bi-Amp upgrade has served me well. The MG3.6's are on the back burner for now!
PM me if you want to get together,
Jim

I certainly like my 1.6's....
Need to rebuild the crossovers, that's the weak link.
