I prefer Marriott for business travels. When paying out of my own pocket, I choose Sheraton, because I find their AMEX card is the most rewarding one.
Perhaps in several years, the two loyalty programs will merge as well. |

OMG - I am so glad I got off that wagon train. Be healthy Richard. That is A LOT of travel. |
Kimpton hotels are very nice, usually small boutique hotels. Also Marriott's Autograph collection.

I am extremely loyal to Marriott. I stay about 80 nights per year. I have been saving all my points over the last few years for my dream retirement trip to Australia. Goal is to be able to stay at nicest Marriotts for 2 weeks. Looking forward to writing the post in a few years asking our friends from Australia for travel recommendations!

In the U.S. we generally try to find a Drury Hotel of one sort or another. For international travel we prefer either NH or, surprisingly, Best Western, who have been purchasing smaller old hotels in great places (old city in Carcassonne, center of Blois, etc.) and updating the inside while maintaining their 'old world' charm. We find the large chains to be like McDonalds. You know what you are going to get, but are boring. We dig thru TripAdvisor and tour books to see if we can find something small & interesting in the part of town where we want to stay.
