conrad-johnson ET3 Tube Stereo Preamplifier Review

Doesn't sound like an easy preamplifier to integrate in the context of many systems unless your system is already very dark. Most of the modern speakers tend to be more neutral or sensitive to midrange and treble emphasis in any of the components in the chain. I am surprised although it's been a long while since I've auditioned CJ components. :scratch2:

Those Teflon caps take a while to break in... he may not have run it long enough to have reached the most balanced sound.

That very well could have been the case. What is the difference between the standard and the SE versions by the way?

The usual answer is a lot more teflon and foil trimmed resistors in "signal critical circuits". So, there's that. Still trying to decide if sending my GAT back for the upgrade, more teflon no doubt, makes sense. Maybe I'll ask the folks at c-j.

I'm confused. This was an article on the ET3, yet it mentions CJD Teflon Caps and shows a photo of them. My SE has them but I thought the standard ET3 did not. Did the reviewer get a SE version and thought it was a regular ET3??:scratch2:

Don't think it's an SE... it would say so on the unit. They may put some teflon in the standard version. A good reason to give them a call... (703) 698-8581. Let us know what they have to say.

CJD Teflon caps are the upgrade over the standard ET3. Also the faceplate for both the ET3 and the SE are the same. The only way you can tell the difference is w/the Teflon caps.

I think the large caps mentioned in the article are of the polypropylene type.

If you look at side by side photos of the ET3 and ET3SE, the orange-red caps in the ET3 get replaced by white caps in the SE...I suspect these are the Teflon caps.

And the reviewer explicitly said he was reviewing the non-SE, so it's likely a mix up on his part.

In all upgraded c-j products I've owned in the past, at very least, the upgrade was specifically noted on the serial#/model number plate on the back of the unit. Looked again at the on in the article and couldn't read it. Still, on Amazon and for the price... I'm sure it's a standard unit.
