12AT7 Recommendations for Doge 8 Preamp

What 12AT7 / ECC801 / ECC81 tubes would you recommend for a Doge 8 Preamp in the linestage?

I have GE JAN 12AT7 in now, but would like a slightly warmer sounding midrange without giving up detail and focus.

I am strongly considering 1960s NOS Siemens ECC81 triple micas. Would the Siemens be better sounding than the GE?

If you're looking for a warm sounding tube, you won't be happy with the Siemens. Try instead the Mullard CV4024s available from Upscale Audio. Not overly warm nee colored and the CV4024s give the Tele ECC801S's a run for their money at a fraction ($35/tube) of the price.

Myles, thanks for the Mullard CV4024s recommendation!

Now that I think about it, I've read that some other audiophiles are using Mullard 12AT7 tube types in the Doge 8 line section.

I tried the Mullards CV4024 in the Doge--big sound stage, quiet and dynamic, but the treble presentation is a little too hot in my system. The Mullards may work better in another setup or system.

I rolled in two NOS Telefunken 12AT7 in the input-tube position (from front of preamp, second tubes from the left). High frequencies are softer, more airy, and placed further back in the soundstage, resulting in a more realistic presentation of classical music with my present setup.

Tip: To pull the top off of the Doge 8 preamp requires a 2.5 mm hex wrench.

Doge 8 NOS Tube recommendations

Can anyone tell me which NOS 12AT7 tubes they prefer in their Doge 8 preamp?

I just purchased this preamp and I am looking for tubes for the line stage section of the preamp.

Thank you,
Mike
