Focal Scala V2 vs Sopra 3

anyone with experience?

rjryan 02-24-2018 08:08 PM

The Sopra no3 is really close to the V2. I "might" even give the edge to the Sopra in the mids and highs, as they are not at all strident. The V2 has much more bass, and control, at least in the system that I heard them in.

The Scala Evo is CRAZY better than both, IMO.

greekspec2 02-24-2018 08:59 PM

well I odered a new set of Scala V2 and both Sopra 3 and Scalas were voiced with my Naim NAP 500DR at Focal and the price difference for the Evo’s I would of got the Maestro III but no more stock.

Congrats! Can’t wait to hear your impressions.

That's consistent with every comment I've seen comparing the Scala versus the Sopra. Enjoy.

I'm curious to know in what areas the Scalas are superior to the Sopra 3's. I love my Sopra 3's, but I'm always interested in possible upgrade paths for the future.

greekspec2 03-14-2018 11:05 AM

the bass for starters very fast tight deep bass, the tweeters are way smoother...more musical they disappear and the fit finish is way better.

avsBuddy 09-05-2018 06:28 PM

It's interesting how some people say Sopra 3 is close to Scala V2 and then others say Scala is clearly superior.

Greekspec, when you say Scala tweeter is smoother, do you mean that it's not so brightness as high frequencies in Sopra 3? Did you have both speakers in your system?

navrsale 10-29-2018 09:40 PM

I agree with your observations

I am trying to optimally match my Scala v2 with electronics. Candidates:

- Esoteric C03 + A03 + K01

- Leben 600cs

- Audia Flight Strumento No1/No4

- Naim?

- Vitus SS-010

...

How would C03/A03 match with Scala? The room is 13' x 25'. I am currently using Fatman Carbon 25W amplifier and it is a lot of juice for my ears. I like to listen orchestral, but also piano solo, modern jazz

GreginNH1 11-02-2018 02:57 PM

I just heard Naim NAP 300 with N272. The sound was sublime.

greekspec2 11-02-2018 04:57 PM

I had my Scala V2 with Naim 500DR,N272,555PS-DR and Superluming full loom

I have arrived at this issue recently.

Out of these, what would you guys recommend?
Focal Sopra No. 3
Focal Scala v2
B&W 802d3

I have paradigm sig s8v2 in my smallish room 12 x 16 x 8 ft. Looking to upgrade. You think a scala would work in this room? I do like bass and actually run 2x 18 inch V1800 PSA subs.

Guessing its between the 802D3 and scala v2 there.

EDIT: Also what about the Scala V2 vs Revel salon 2?

Also what are the differences with EM and the EM Evo line? Anyone compare these? How about a maestro evo vs stella non-evo ?

Definitively the Scala v2.
it plays in another league than the Sopra 3

It is also "better" than the B&W, but this is another brand and a question of taste!

junkfroggy 08-11-2019 12:58 PM

I have narrowed down my options to all Focal at this point.

- Focal Scala v2 (best "budget" option in my case)
- Focal Maestro III
- Focal Scala Evo (although the price is higher than both of the above)

My ranking would be
- Scala v2
- Scala Evo
- Maestro III

Like this, you save money for the other components!

I just ordered Scala EVO to replace a pair of Sopra 3 ive had for 2 years. Haven't heard them but love the Sopras so Im not worried about the sound. Have to sell the Sopras now. Cant wait to compare.

moviemike 09-20-2019 11:20 AM

Scala evo showed up last week. Been breaking them in. One surprise was how much shorter the Scala is from the Sopra 3. The spec sheets all say they are about the same height at 49 inches. Without feet the Sopras highest point in the back is 51" and the Scala is 47".
The Scalas are much heavier and I love the wheels on the bottom.

Superfrg 09-20-2019 11:44 AM

Congrats on the new speakers, please give all your impressions on the difference between the sopras and scala evo's

dvir 09-24-2019 02:24 PM

Congrats and would appreciate your impressions as well. I'm exactly at the point of considering this upgrade.

Thanks

moviemike 09-25-2019 02:23 PM

The Scalas have been breaking in and sound much better then the first day. I also got the Isoacoustic gaia on them.
I havent sold my Sopras yet so Im tempted to put them back in to do a real side by side comparison.

Main impression the biggest difference is in clarity, transparency and detail. The tweeter and midrange is also actually smoother then the Sopras but with more detail.

Using REW the bass response in my room is the exact same in volume and extension as the Sopra 3. The bass does have more detail, tighter and more thump.

Imaging is bigger. Individual sounds are bigger and the soundstage is deeper and taller.

Overall very happy with the upgrade. If you have the Sopras and like them then you will love these. If you have the sopras but would like a more neutral sound with much better clarity top to bottom and smoother treble then the upgrade is worth it.

Signal path
windows computer - usb to matrix x-spdif to i2s port on PS Audio directstream sr - Mark Levinson 523 to Levinson 534 amp. Wire is all Audioquest.

jesuisunutopiste 10-11-2019 01:11 AM

My advice: take them off from the wheels and put them either on spikes or on isolators. After a year on wheels (not good), and another years on their spikes (better), I now have my Scala v2 on Aktyna feets (spectacularly good !). The difference is H U G E !!!

moviemike 10-15-2019 12:51 PM

I have the Isoacoustics Gaia on mine now. Very much worth it.

stev809 12-05-2019 08:25 PM

Hi Mike, Are your sopra’s black? I’m posting here and on other forums to try and find if anyone has listened to the sopra3 with a hegel h360. Being a working class audiophile I need the combo to work. The hegel has really ‘woke up’ some difficult speakers in the past but it would be reassuring to know they wouldn’t make the sopras midrange hard or edgy.

moviemike 12-16-2019 04:18 PM

Hello

My Sopras are black. I havent heard them with Hegel but have read a lot of people that have and really like the combo. the Sopras like amps that have current and the Hegels do.

Alpha12 08-04-2020 12:16 AM

Sopra 3 or Scala Evo, what plays louder?

Mike,

Having owned both the Sopra 3 and the now the Scala Evo, which will play louder? I have a large room.

Thank you.
