Why Are Salvagers Prying Open the Titanic? - Pop. Mechanics

"A judge in Virginia has ruled that a designated salvage company can open up the hull of the RMS Titanic to retrieve a valuable piece of equipment: an original Marconi radiotelegraph. And as it has for over a century, the wreck of the Titanic continues to inspire strong opinions and deep curiosity."

"The Titanic receives a special amount of attention even among other tragic events and major shipwrecks, but it's still one among many wrecks with complex salvage laws."

Too bad it won't look look it did:

The wreck is decaying at an pretty rapid rate. This judge was convinced that the Marconi is of significant historical value and so she has authorized its salvage.

It's also worth noting that the company that has the salvage rights was recently purchased out of bankruptcy so if they can get their hands on this it would prove to be a nice score to make the purchase worthwhile. Lousy reason to raid the wreck IMO especially since it's a grave site.

I can see both points of view on this, but if that Marconi shows up for sale via some auction house than we'll know it was profiteering at its most base level.

And what if they find something else as valuable or more in the process? After
more than 100 years, what is the condition that the radio telegraph will be in?
Further, the salvage operation is going to be worth such a considerable amount
that there must be something else in their thinking. All this trouble to get a
judge order for a telegraph? :scratch2:

I'm a rather avid collector of Titanic related items. Here's my half-scale sculpted replica of the famous "Honour and Glory crowning time" clock that was located at the top of the Olympic and Titanic Grand Staircases. The clock is my latest addition, just arrived about two weeks ago.

You can see the clock in this photo:

This canvas reproduction of Maiden Voyage of Titanic by Marine Artist Chris Mayger is in my office. I've had it maybe 24-25 years I guess. It's a pretty dramatic painting.

Here's a pretty good portion of my Titanic collector's plate collection.

Ridiculous. Whatever is left of it, if anything, won't be recognizable.

I’m afraid you are 100% correct. I have done salvage diving many decades ago; once the articles see the surface air, they age rapidly right in front of your eyes.

Unless they plan on encapsulating it in sea water, I don’t see the point.

I was a Radio/Electronics Officer with Shell Tankers for 25 years. Some of the early Marconi marine transmitters I would have loved to heave over the side to join the Titanic - a 100 watts of feeble power output to cover the world!
Later on sense prevailed and we had installed 2kW output transmitters, praise be to common sense.

If you are ever in California, there's a high-end audio store in San Rafael that also has a bit of a Titanic museum. Half the time I go there to listen and check out the equipment. Other times I go there to admire the historical treasures.
