Nikon Holy Trinity Lens'
 

So I am toying with the idea of getting a new lens for my D750.

I currently have the standard kit lens 24-120 ED F4 lens and a 50mm 1.4g prime.

I would eventually like to get all three lens' in the holy trinity line up.

For the first lens, i'm kind of tossed between the 24-70mm F2.8 VR or the 70-200mm F2.8 VRII.

I'm leaning towards the 70-200 due to the extended zoom...

Oddly enough the second lens i want is the 14-24mm 2.8g

Any suggestions?

I can't comment on the Nikon but I have the Canon 70-200 2.8 and it is my go to lens for portrait and candid pics of my son. Its still the best glass I own!

I use the 24-70mm F2.8 VR on my D810 as a prime lens.

I also use my Nikon 24-70 f2.8 as my primary lens for indoor-outdoor photography with my D700.

next is my 70-200 f2.8 and then my 17-35 f 2.8 and lastly the 14-24 f2.8

What are you missing now? It sounds like you want the extra reach, so yes, the 70-200 is a good option for your next lens.

The 24-70 gets the most use from me for travel and walking around, but the others prove useful too. And you already have a very good option for between 24-120 until you decide to 'trade up.'

I find the 14-24 to be fun, but there's a bit of a learning curve.

I love my 50mm prime. Its a nice carry around lens and its great in low light applications. I tend to take this lens with me when I go to indoor gatherings or situations where i dont have full sun.

The problem comes when trying to take candid shots, you just can't get a good candid shot with the 50mm with out getting really close or cropping. I try not to crop my photos and feel you need to fill the frame as best as possible. When you try to get close to get a good pic, the subject will move or get camera shy and the shot is ruined.

The 24-120 F4 is a great lens but you start to run into problems when indoors or in low light.

Sounds like the 70-200mm is the way to go for my next lens!

With respect to low light, don't be afraid to jack up the ISO and be sure to shoot RAW. Between the modern sensors and what post processing in Lightroom can do, you'll be amazed at the results.

I am shooting raw and using light room.

In your opinion, how high can you bump up the ISO without getting too much grain?

Ive shot as high as 6400 and it looks okay until i need to crop in.

I went with the 24-70mm for my D610. It's the lens I use the most and sometime it's the only one I take with a 50mm prime.

With the D750, you shouldn't be afraid to increase the ISO. You have much less issue with noise on a full frame camera and 6400 and even higher shouldn't be an issue.

The choice of lens in the end is really dependant on what you are shooting. I mostly shoot urban settings so I feel less need for a powerful zoom.

Of lenses mentioned, I would add the 70-200. Maybe it's old age but I have moved away from heavy zooms and select a few primes for travel, the exception is the 70-200mm. My favorite Nikon lens is probably the 85mm 1.4. The 14-24 is a great lens and probably the least used.
