That's a nice JBL portfolio!!

Yes the L300/4333 is a timeless JBL classic. I wouldn't mind having a pair of either either...if I only had the room!

Thanks, I especially like my L100s. Mine are mint and in mint cabinets with orange Quadrex grilles (replacement made by a fellow selling these on e-bay). Some people don't hold these speakers in high regard and there are plenty of speakers that sound better but these are timeless, and big part of audio history. The speaker in the Maxell add (below) is an L100

Oh yes, this ad is iconic. They can bash the L100 all they want, it's still a classic and was a very successful speaker. I still find myself kind of wishing I still had mine...but I had to selll them to buy my L220's.

The guy that bought them still has them, though a few years ago he sold me back my JBL speaker stands. I use them for my 4313B's.

I'm a big JBL supporter, too. Here's what's around my home and studio.

1 pair - JBL 4312A
1 pair - JBL Control 5
1 pair - JBL Pro 1
1 pair - JBL EON10 G2 - powered
1 pair - JBL LSR6332
5 - JBL LSR6328P - powered
1 - JBL 6312SP - powered sub

The JBL 4312A's are in my vintage system, driven by a McIntosh MA5100 integrated amp. The JBL Control 5's are the surround speakers in my HT setup. The JBL Pro1's are outside on the deck under my house driven by the Sonos ZP120 amp. The JBL EON10 G2's are powered speakers with 120 watt amps on the woofers, and 50 watt amps on the tweeters, and are connected to my Roland Fantom X6 keyboard. The JBL LSR6332 speakers are from the JBL professional line, and I use them in my studio as monitors, driven by a Crown K1 amp in the control room, or connected to the McIntosh studio system. The JBL LSR6328P's are JBL professional line powered speakers with 250 watt amps on the woofers, 120 watt amps on the tweeters, plus Room Mode Correction, and they are used in the control room at the console and center and surrounds in the home theater. The JBL 6312SP powered subwoofer is from the JBL professional line, with a 250 watt amp, Room Mode Correction, plus input/output options, and is used in the Studio for monitoring, and is also used with the McIntosh studio system.

There are other speakers in the house beside JBL's and PMC's. I also have Velodyne, B & W, McIntosh, and a few pair of Creative T20's I use with the computers. They're all just one big happy family. Pretty soon their will be a newbee......the Fathom f113.

Masterlu 05-20-2009 04:02 PM

I too have owned my share of JBL's over the years:

L100's
4311's
L220's
L300's
4343's
2241-based (18") Sub with BX63 Crossover
[now on duty in Pete's house]

I see we have some dedicated JBL nuts here...past and present!

As I've reported previously, that 2241-based sub on duty here, formerly in Ivan's theater, marches with the greatest of ease, providing beautifully warm and powerful bass to the Florida room system. It can shake that room without even trying.

Meanwhile, the more I look at the photos of the K2 S9900, the more I

Masterlu 05-20-2009 04:35 PM

I checked out the K2 S9900, I was surprised they only rated it for 500 watts. I know I could hit it with 2KW's.

Also thought it was a bit light at 180lbs. Still a beauty, I will audition one somewhere soon...

I was maybe a bit surprised at the 500 watt rating too...but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

At 180 lbs, it isn't extremely heavy, but then the cablinet is really not much larger than the L220 (112 lbs for L220A). It's only slightly wider. I wouldn't have minded seeing the K2 S9900 a bit taller. It's still gorgeous though...

I'd be very interested to hear your impressions if you get a chance to audition a set.

Only one lonely pair of 4410A monitors here. I'd like to have a pair of l300's to keep them company. My uncle who is mostly responsible for getting me into this hobby has a late 50's or early 60's pair of JBL PA or pro monitor type speakers. They're about the size of a refridgerator with a horn loaded 15" woofer.

The K2 series of JBL speakers was introdusce in 1989 to supercede the Everest. That year, the K2-S9500 received Stereo Sound magazine's Component of the Year award. It went into regular production in 1990 and was a success even with a price tag of over $30,000/pr. When you consider the current model K2 S9900 at $44,650 a pair, and factor inflation, the K2 S9900's are far cheaper than the original design of 20 years ago.

Yes, and the S9900 is said to be a head and shoulders improvement over the S9800 and its predecessors.

A long time ago I owned a pair of L26 JBL's paired up with a Yamaha CR820 Receiver.

I still have friends that talk about the music that used to come out of those speakers!

I still miss those speakers.

In the late 70's I owned a pair of R123.
My son has a pair of TR 125's in his room and recently I purchased a pair of 2235H woofers to be used in a full range system with Altec 604-8H duplex speakers. Keeping it in the lansing Family.
It's GREAT to see a JBL forum at AA!

I bought a pair of L100's in the early '70s. Still have them and will probably never get rid of them. The foam grills have been replaced and some of the foam surrounding the tweeters has begun to deteriorate. They still sound great. I enjoy them as part of my 2 channel home theatre.

jdandy 06-02-2009 11:28 AM

There are a lot of JBL owners, and fans lurking in the shadows.

Tranquil 06-02-2009 12:44 PM

You never know, you might also have some Altec fans in the shadows. Altec speakers (Not computer speakers) are still being manufactured and supported by Great Plains Audio.Great Plains Audio's Homepage

JBL owner

I, for one, listen to my McIntosh gear through JBL speakers. I have been a collector for years and have a rather large collection. There are many places in our home where there are McIntosh systems set up and in each location there are at least one set of JBL's and in many cases multiple JBL set ups. My main listening area uses the JBL 250Ti. They sound very much like the Mac LS-360's. I grew up in a home where JBL was the speaker of choice. I guess I have just gotten used to the sound they put out. Even when I was selling audio (late 80's early 90's) and I was around many high end speaker brands and could buy them for half cost I still stuck with JBL! To my ears nothing sounds as good. Keep in mind were talking vintage gear now. If I could afford some of the high end stuff they are producing today I'd have those, but for now, being semi retired, I'm happy with what I've got and I know that many JBL guys would drool over the collection I've put together. Cheers, Frank

What are some of the current JBL speakers you would recommend?

jdandy 06-05-2009 09:41 PM

Frank.......The JBL 250Ti is a sweet speaker. I was pretty hot for a pair of the Limited Edition 250Ti speakers back in the early 90's.

Have your 250Ti's needed the woofers refoamed?

Vettedrummer 06-07-2009 03:55 PM

JBL Speaker user

Dan, I was able to pick up a pair of new Drivers when they needed to be redone. I have since had the original ones redone and have them as a spare pair. I also own the 240Ti, 120Ti, and the 18Ti. Our home is furnished with teak woods so they are a natural when the situation requires it! All the other JBL's I own are in the Walnut finish except for the L-36 which are in oak and my 2KTi's are in beech along with the matching center channel speaker. The biggest part of the collection is in my basement audio museum, as my wife calls it. Right now my biggest job is to get the "museum" organized. It's hard to even walk in there right now. I need to get everything where it needs to be so the display looks nice and also so I can listen to every one of them. I have several projects waiting for me right now involving veneering. I have a set of the L-300's that I've always wanted to recover in Teak veneer. Maybe they could move on up to the living room someday. I know some guys say don't do it they will drop in value. That's only true if I wanted to sell them, which I don't. The ones I have sport JBL blue grilles. I also have a second set of L-36's that I plan to recover in rosewood. These also have the blue grilles and would set off very nicely in that combination. Another project I'm playing with is to rebuild the fretwork grilles for a set of Apollo's. It's going pretty good so fair, but it takes lots of time and a stead hand and a good eye to be sure the parts I'm replacing are of the same vintage as the ones I'm working on. These grilles seem to be in all different thicknesses of wood so finding a match takes time. Then sometimes once built it ends up being larger then the frame work it needs to fit into. Hey it keeps me off the streets! Cheers, Frank

JBL Recom

Tony, right now I'd look at the JBL LS series. Very nice sound in a very good looking cabinet. (Several different models in the line up) The only catch is to fine them. I don't mean just so you can listen to them, but to find a dealer anywhere that has any in stock. JBL seems to be playing some stupid game and keeping the US market out of bounds for their speakers. You got to look real hard to seek out a source for them and then be willing to buy them without hearing them. "TRUST in JBL" they should call it. Perhaps in New York, LA, or Chicago you can fine dealers that stock them. Alot of the big buck speakers they offer now are available in the US, but the cost is way up there and at least in my area (Michigan) no one is stocking any of them. Gone are the days of walking into the local HiFi shop and being able to listen to JBL. Most of us just keep the vintage stuff up and running and keep wishing that maybe someday JBL will once again offer what they sell in Japan to the US market. I have no idea where I'd put any more however! Cheers, Frank

I have grilles like that on my Olympus pair. What would you suggest using to touch up the grilles a little and remove a scratch on the walnut veneer?
