Mc2000 blew up again. Help?
I love this amp but the right channel has literally blown up each of the last three years. Sparks, melted “tar” leaking out etc...
The only authorized repair person in the Seattle area that I am aware of says he now thinks transformer problems and I should send it back to the factory as he can’t test the output transformers. Anyone have experience sending amps back to the factory or know of someone who can figure this out for me? Can’t get any response from the factory over the last couple weeks. I assume COVID related but I would really like to get this amp rebuilt/fixed Worked perfect for more than ten years. I miss it |
I would call Audio Classics.

Sparks? Melted tar? THREE TIMES!!!??? I would toss it and buy something that won't burn the house down. Seriously--why would you take a chance?
|
I concur with a call to Audio Classics.

Something is not quite right here. There must be a rational explanation for these failures - IE, the amplifier is not happy with the tubes being used.

I agree with Peter. Time to get rid of that amp before something really bad happens. Buy another one if you really like the MC2000.

OP, looks like you have 2 choices. Follow your local repair center advise, or flog it. Sparking and melting seems to be a real fire hazard.

I know what I would do; move on.

I remember when Sidney Corderman was designing the amp.It was different. It had two power Transformers and two output (Autoformers). They were pretty Beefy. Not much tar in them.I never heard of any wires shorting to the can or anything. Let us know what you find out. All McIntosh amps are thoroughly drop tested, and inspected, So they won't Blow up and Burn...

Guess I’ll start with audioclassic. I really love the sound of this amp.
Thanks for your suggestions. |
